Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony descends a staircase into a gallery/showroom of sorts where he discovers Tipton seated in a high back chair at a desk with only his right arm visible to viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : [Tipton turns a switch on his desk, plunging the room into darkness except for a spotlight shining on Anthony. Tipton chuckles]  Know what you are, Mike?

    Michael Anthony : What, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : You're a great motion picture star.

    Michael Anthony : I am?

John Beresford Tipton : The spotlight is on you. You're the glamour boy. The girls scream when they see you. They want your autograph. There are stories about you in all the fan magazines.

    Michael Anthony : Yes, sir.

[Anthony winces as he looks up at the spotlight above]

Michael Anthony : But the light is blinding me, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : The glare of the spotlight makes it sometimes hard to see just where you're going.

[Tipton turns the desk switch and normal lighting returns]

John Beresford Tipton : There. It's all over, Mike.

    Michael Anthony : Yes, sir.

    John Beresford Tipton : Here.

[Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire.

    [Anthony bows and departs]

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. Until his death, I was Executive Secretary to one of the world's richest men - John Beresford Tipton. He had what was perhaps the strangest hobby in the world, and one of the few fortunes large enough to indulge it. This is Silverstone, Mr. Tipton's fabulous 60,000-acre estate. Here, after his retirement from the world of business and high finance, he pursued his hobby, which was every now and then, giving away to a total stranger the sum of $1,000,000. And because he insisted on remaining anonymous, I was the man who actually delivered the check.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  Our next millionaire, Ann Loomis, was soon to be Ann Griffin. She was going to marry Victor Griffin in June, as soon as he graduated from college.

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony is walking on a California beach, searching for the next millionaire]  Pardon me, are you Ann Griffin? Mrs. Victor Griffin?

Ann Loomis Griffin : Uh, huh

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony. They said at the motel that if you weren't in your room, you might be here on the beach.

Ann Loomis Griffin : My husband isn't here right now, Mr. Anthony. He' having our car checked over. We're leaving tomorrow.

Michael Anthony : [Going through his briefcase]  I've never met your husband, Mrs. Griffin. But I have a gift for you.

Ann Loomis Griffin : A wedding present?

Michael Anthony : You might call it that, if you like.

    [Displays a check]

Michael Anthony : A cashier's check for a million dollars.

Ann Loomis Griffin : A million dollars? Why should you give me... Well, now look, Mr. Anthony. I think you'd better be on your way. My husband will be here in a minute, and he's a very big man.

Michael Anthony : Well, this is a very big check. I am not the donor, Mrs. Griffin. Your benefactor must remain anonymous.

[Removing a document from his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : The money is yours, a tax-free gift, if you will just sign this.

Ann Loomis Griffin : Just sign, that's all?

Michael Anthony : One small condition: Your promise to tell no one but your husband the exact amount of the check or the circumstances under which you received it. If you do tell, the money will be reclaimed.

Ann Loomis Griffin : But why? A million dollars!

Michael Anthony : To do with as you wish.

    [Handing her a pen]

Michael Anthony : Now, if you'll just sign.

Ann Loomis Griffin : [Looking around]  I'll get a pen.

Michael Anthony : You're holding my pen in your right hand.

Ann Loomis Griffin : [Looks at the pen in her right hand]  Oh, but I'm lefthanded.

[Switches pen to her left hand and signs the agreement]

Ann Loomis Griffin : Can you read it?

    Michael Anthony : Quite well

[Putting the pledge away into his briefcase]

    Michael Anthony : Thank you.

Ann Loomis Griffin : Thank you.

Michael Anthony : [Preparing to depart]  Good luck, Mrs. Griffin.

Ann Loomis Griffin : Oh, Mr. Anthony, did you say I have to tell my husband?

Michael Anthony : [Uneasily]  No, I said he was the only one you can tell, if you wish to.

Ann Loomis Griffin : [to herself, after Anthony leaves]  I wish to, but I won't. Not just yet.
