And so the third, darker, season of "Miami Vice" begins...
DVD_Connoisseur11 April 2008
"When Irish Eyes Are Crying" is a strong opening to the third season of "Miami Vice". Starring a baby faced Liam Neeson, this tale never sat comfortably with me in the '80s as it attempts to cover the subject of the IRA. Such a difficult and complex topic doesn't really fit the "Miami Vice" format and some lines are awkward and contrived. Tubbs is sporting spectacles, perhaps to add an element of pseudo- intellectualism to the proceedings.

Despite these reservations, it's not a bad episode and it has some unforgettable scenes, particularly Crockett's visit to an arms dealer. There are times when it may not be a good idea to question the quality of a dealer's wares...

Gina, played by Saundra Santiago, has never looked better. She radiates a natural beauty here and delivers a solid performance.

This season has a harder edge than the previous two and uses a more sombre colour palette. On the fashion side, Crockett starts to roll up his sleeves. Gone are the pastel colours, replaced with a darker wardrobe.

8 out of 10. This episode contains music from Lennon, The Pogues and Patti LaBelle and Bill Champlin.

Sun-soaked terrorism
Mr-Fusion3 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
There were major changes in store for "Miami Vice" when the third season opened. One was a shift towards topical plot lines, and 'When Irish Eyes Are Crying' brings the Northern Ireland conflict to the beaches of South Florida. The show also looks different, with pastels being phased out in favor of natural tones. No minor alteration with a style-centric series like this. The real shocker is the demise of Crockett's Daytona. It's always sad to see that car go, but at least they sent it out in a blaze of . . . well, an inferno, to say the least.

That alone makes this a memorable episode, but the guest stars include Liam Neeson in a charismatic turn as an Irish expat. It's a dark one when Gina falls for him, but you just know it won't end well. And it doesn't.

Solid episode.

Warning: Spoilers
When Irish Eyes Are Crying is a solid episode. What worked: The story! Izzy tips off about an arm dealer. Vice must deal with the I R A. The story is not the usual drug dealers! Liam Neeson I R A character creates the charming, but violent bad guy. The side story of Gina falling for the terrorist creates a twist. Crockett loses his car in a big way dealing with the arm dealers. (Boom) Lieutenant Martin Castillo character shines as the expert who past profession saves the day. What did not work: To condensed of a story. Should have been a 2 part episode. Worth watching 7 out of 10 stars.

Terrorism comes to Miami

Warning: Spoilers
After Zito and Switek receive a tip off from Izzy the team begin an investigation into an Irishman named Carroon who was a member of the IRA but claims to have given up violence and become a campaigner for peace; after listening to his latest speech they come to the conclusion that Izzy has given them some duff information; that is until they learn where is has come from. This leads Crockett and Tubbs to a major arms dealer who will provide anything from handguns to Stinger missiles and it is the latter item that Carroon is reported to be interested in! Matters are complicated by the fact that Gina has fallen for Carroon and is convinced of his innocence.

As a story this episode is fairly gripping with some quality action which includes the shocking 'death'... of Sonny's treasured Ferrari... I thought he was going to cry! The main item of note for this episode is that it features Hollywood A-lister Liam Neeson as Carroon; of course this was before he became famous, Paul Gleason and James Bond star Walter Gotell as the arms dealer Max Klizer. Saundra Santiago did a fine job as Gina even if it seemed unlikely that her character would end up in a suspect bed the way she did... that of course is down to the writers not her though!
