Ensign Parker has been writing this novel about how an young Ensign, like himself, does these great things for the Allied effort during the war. He has one chapter about how the young Ensign sank the largest ship in the Japanese navy, the invincible Yakamura.
During this time, Parker gets a letter from his hometown girlfriend, Mary, saying that she has been dating other people. One being a European US fighter that has shot down many enemy planes. Parker feels like he is not good enough for Mary.
The crew of the 73 sees how Parker is down in the dumps so they have a plan to help out. They send Mary one of the chapters of his novel saying that Ensign Parker is the person the sank the Yakamura. His local paper picks up the story and the next thing you know his congressman is flying over to personally pin a medal on Parker. It's a false story that keeps getting bigger everyday.
There nothing wrong with the plot of this episode but there seemed to be a lot of slapstick during the program. Poor Joe Flynn was either falling into the ocean, nearly killed by a grenade or being forced to hide in awkward places all during the broadcast. Most of the situations were funny but how much misfortune can follow the poor Captain till it gets rather old. One bright spot about this show was the flow kept the attention of the viewer in order to find out how this nightmare was going to end. Nice watch.
