The Mary Tyler Moore show is one of the best written, acted television series.
I've watched 'Mare' since I was a little boy - and, when it was shown in late-night repeats(here in NYC), i couldn't go to sleep until i'd seen 'Mare' and the gang.
The plot is that a huckster cons Ted into opening a 'school. The con then runs off with the money, and leaves Ted in a jam, and, the only way out is to try and get the gang to help him.
This episode's always stuck in my mind, for the brilliant scene at the end, at the hotel ballroom, where Mary, Lou, Ted, Georgette (And Tony Kramer - Mary's date) go to tell the students they'll reimburse their monies.
However, when they arrive - late - their's only ONE student (played wonderfully by the under-rated Leonard Frey) - and he doesn't want his money back - he wants to become
a sports announcer.
This scene - no matter how many times i've seen this episode (and that's a lot) always manages to make me laugh (hard) with the brilliant one-liners from the Mary & Lou, and the dead-pan delivery of Leonard Frey and the rest.
Time does not diminish the humor, and talent of this ensemble cast's work, and this episode is just one of many - too many to count - that gives them a tour de force chance to shine for us.
