- TriviaIn its last two seasons this show often reused plot points (or even entire stories) from earlier stories in the first two seasons. But the teaser in this one, where an innocent man is caught red-handed with a gun standing in front of a murder victim is the same used in a story broadcast almost exactly one year before this in The Faces of Murder (1973), although the rest of the story is completely different.
- GoofsWhen Mannix is standing at his desk in his office, he's holding a manila folder in his hands and is leafing through its contents. The camera then briefly switches to Peggy and then back to Joe but the manila folder has completely disappeared as it's not in his hands and not on his desk anywhere.
- Quotes
Joe Mannix: Oh, uh, Mrs. Walker, please sit down.
Cathy Walker: Mr. Mannix, I know you didn't want to see me. I'll only take a minute.
Joe Mannix: Well, I'm supposed to be in the business of helping people, and when I can't see a way to do that, I just think it's a waste of time and money.
Cathy Walker: But you can help.
Joe Mannix: I don't know how. You were there. Your husband had a gun in his hand. You saw him standing in front of Victor De Marco's body. You saw him run.
Cathy Walker: Yes.
Joe Mannix: Can you think of a reason your husband would want to kill De Marco?
Cathy Walker: No.
Joe Mannix: You're sure?
Cathy Walker: Mr. Mannix, my only concern is what's going to happen now. The police will kill Steve. He'll force them to. I know him. He'd rather die than let himself be locked up.
Joe Mannix: What do you think I can do, Mrs. Walker?
Cathy Walker: Find him before the police do, and make him turn himself in.
Joe Mannix: Well, do you think he'd listen?
Cathy Walker: He has to. He's been shot, he needs a doctor. I don't care what Steve has done, Mr. Mannix. I love him. And I want him alive. That's the main thing. That's the only thing.
Joe Mannix: All right, Mrs. Walker, I'll see what I can do. You know that if, uh, you hear from your husband, you'll have to notify the police.
Cathy Walker: Yes, Lieutenant Malcolm told me.
Joe Mannix: Did he also tell you that he'll have no trouble getting a court order to put a tap on your phone?
Cathy Walker: Yes.
Joe Mannix: Good. It helps all around if you stick to the rules.
Cathy Walker: Thank you, Mr. Mannix.
This was the only story written by Lou Shaw, who who went on to create and write for QUINCY. To his credit, Lou worked overtime. It's about a "guy with a past" called Steve Walker, played by John Bennett Perry (Matthew Perry's dad), who is locked in a room with a dead man -- who happens to be his boss. It also turns out he escaped from prison! Davey Davison (as Cathy) plays the man's wife, who hires Joe to prove him innocent. Bottom line, it's a long way around the mountain, but a fairly good mystery if you watch carefully. That's the key.
This was an early role for Perry, later known for playing the sheriff on FALCON CREST.
The BIG star here is Marie Windsor, playing Mrs. DeMarco. Next to Beverly Garland, Marie was queen of 50s noir films. Her character, though, only adds more to the mystery. Stay tuned. Popular character actor Val Avery plays Doyle.
Leslie H. Martinson directed, and did an excellent job with this top cast. Can you guess who really did it? That's what makes this fun with lots of cookies.
