Quotes
-
Joe Mannix : It was Brastow.
Lt. Adam Tobias : From the prison infirmary?
Joe Mannix : You know what I mean.
Lt. Adam Tobias : Come on, you gotta be kidding. You make at least one mortal enemy a month. This could be any one of them.

Joe Mannix : [Tom Wall enters Joe's office] Hi, Tom.
Tom Wall : Hey, morning, Joe.
Joe Mannix : Oh, Peggy, this is Tom Wall, Ross' partner.
[turns to Tom]
Joe Mannix : Peggy Fair, my secretary.
Tom Wall : Nice to meet you. All you private cops get such pretty ladies working for you?
Joe Mannix : Just the lucky ones.
[Tom smiles]
Joe Mannix : What brings you to our neighborhood? Where's Ross?
Tom Wall : Ross and his wife are out at her parents' place in Simi Valley. I just wanted to talk to you for a minute.
Joe Mannix : Sure, sit down.
Peggy Fair : Would you like some coffee?
Tom Wall : Yeah, fine. Cream, no sugar. Thanks.
[Peggy leaves to get the coffee]
Joe Mannix : What's on your mind?
Tom Wall : It's about Ross.
Joe Mannix : Oh?
Tom Wall : He probably seemed a little uptight yesterday.
Joe Mannix : Well, he sure did.
Tom Wall : I guess he didn't tell you, but he's up for a big promotion in New York. And the way he handles this Brastow thing, well, it'll be a big factor.
Peggy Fair : [gives Tom his coffee] Here you are.
Tom Wall : Thanks.
Joe Mannix : I guess he's got reason to be a little skittish.
Tom Wall : Right. And also, uh... it's his wife. I got to talking to her yesterday, and... she's not crazy about his being a line detective. Wants him behind a desk in an office... away from the flying bullets.
Joe Mannix : I guess my story about being shot at last night upset Mary.
Tom Wall : Yeah. Yeah, it did a little. I just wanted you to understand, Joe. I only had a minute. I've got to go.
Joe Mannix : Anything new about Brastow?
Tom Wall : I checked this morning. Still got a tummy-ache.
Joe Mannix : Oh, that poor fella.
Tom Wall : Yeah.
[gives Peggy the coffee cup he drank from]
Tom Wall : Thanks for the coffee.
Peggy Fair : Anytime.
Tom Wall : That's very nice.
[walks out the door and leaves]
