What he was then isn't what he's now
***SPOILERS*** Doing his job spying for his country in Communist East Berlin US intelligent agent Peter Murphy, Robert Lansing, is on the run from the KGB and East German Government spy agency who gets a life-line by running into playboy millionaire Mark Wainwright, also played by Lansing, who gets shot by mistake by the East Germans in them thinking that he's Murphy! Murphy told by his boss Col. Jack Forbes, Murray Hamilton, to take on Wainwright's, whom Murphy is a carbon copy of, identity and use his connections in knowing and dealing with the high and mighty of the world of business to go on spying for his country.
With his past erased and having to take on Wainwright's identity as well as his millions Murphy does his best to play the role of the high flying playboy but is not given by his section boss Dol. Forbes any information in what his, friends associates as well as personal life, personality are all about. Playing it by ear Murphy/Wainwright is introduced to Weinwright's wife Eva, Dana Wyter, whom he-That's Wainwright-had a cold and stormy relationship with. Being the exact opposite as Weinwright was to her in abusing and occasionally beating her up Eva falls in love with sweet and caring Murphy even though she knows that he isn't really her husband Mark Wainwright.
***SPOILERS*** It's now up to Murphy to find out what made Wainwright tick and what kind of business he was involved in that as it turned out was dealing with the enemy as a possible spy and arms dealer making Murphy a double-agent for the US as well as the Free world. That as long as the secret of his true identity is kept hidden from the world at large especially the Communist World that if discovered would end up making him a walking dead man!
