- Mildred Roper (Yootha Joyce) insists to her husband George (Brian Murphy) that he must accompany him to a ball in a boat in the river Thames. George refuses, point blank. Mildred insists so George ends up locking himself in the bath.
Jo (Sally Thomsett) is out for the occasion. She needs to go to a the funeral of an uncle of hers. Chrissy (Paula Wilcox) is afraid that Robin (Richard O'Sullivan), who is staying in as well, is going to try to make a pass at her because they will be on their own for the night. Robin is going to cook wonderfully and create the right atmosphere.
Mildred talks to them out of desperation, and Chrissy has the idea of insisting Robin go to the ball. Robin tries to avoid the date, but he finally agrees.
He and Mildred go to the ball. Robin feels strange, because he is the youngest person in the boat, but Mildred knows she's the envy of all the ladies at the ball room. They talk, dance and have fun, taking into account the difficult circumstances.
George finally realises that Mildred is not waiting for him out of the bathroom. He asks Chrissy, and she tells them where they have gone. George runs to the ball in a taxi. He doesn't have the ticket to enter, but luckily the doorman (Mike Savage) lets him in out of pity and because the ball is about to end.
There he tells Mildred to go with her. She doesn't want, but they three go out. George ends up falling overboard but Mildred prevents Robin to jump after him to save him, minding Robin is wearing his best suit. So Robin just throws a safety ring which George holds onto for dear life.
