- Robin Tripp (Richard O'Sullivan) is very nervous about his cooking examinations. He does them terribly bad, creating disgusting badly-cooked dishes, so he fails. He thinks his parents won't fund his studies anymore, so he makes plans to go back to Southhampton and work in the piping factory his father has, as his flatmates Chrissy (Paula Wilcox) and Jo (Sally Thomsett) think it wouldn't be so horrible to be the owner and boss' son. Larry (Doug Fisher) starts making plans to move in. Mildred Roper (Yootha Joyce) will miss him especially, as she says it was good "to have a man about the house", to George Roper's (Brian Murphy) disagreement.
Mr Tripp (Leslie Sands), Robin's father, visits him in London. He's really surprised to find that his flatmates are female. He tells Robin that he doesn't want him at the factory, becasue he would be a disaster on the job. He'll pay his expenses for another year if he promises he will work harder for his exams next year. Robin agrees.
