Xavier Marton is a timid and paranoid man who likes model railways.
He goes to the police convinced that his wife Giselle is trying to poison him.
Maigret sends the police to look into both of them. Giselle is flighty, outgoing. She works in a lingerie shop and sees another man.
It turns out that Xavier might also be close with his sister in law, a widow who has come to live with them several years ago.
