A very strange Magnum episode.

There's no car chase. No gun play. A short foot chase through a street market scene (later referenced, strangely as a "Mall fight") which seems awfully contrived - but that's about it for action here. A Magnum episode does not need action to be good - just look at "Solo Flight", for example (S07E15).. But this one falls rather flat.

This is about Carol, and a dirty family secret about her past. All is kinda resolved at the end of the episode, but even though I'm an avid Magnum fan this has to be one of the weakest, most directionless episodes in the series: the scriptwriters really phoned it in on this one. There was an awful lot of meat left on the potential bone with this episode. I enjoy the odd genteel, quiet Magnum, but this one was wont of substance.

Watch it, enjoy it - as I did. Just don't expect much.

Warning: Spoilers
It's annoying how Magnum, Abigail and Brenda spend the episode acting as if Carol were a little child who needs protecting from the truth. She's a grown woman, for God's sake. If she can handle the responsibility and stress of being an assistant district attorney, she can surely handle finding out that she's the result of an affair between her father and Brenda.

In the end, Brenda suddenly decides not to get to know the daughter that she was so desperate to find, presumably for "Carol's own good." Again, Carol has to be protected like a 10-year-old who wouldn't be able to deal with an adoptive mother and a birth mother. Brenda leaves and Carol instantly forgives Abigail for hiding the truth from her all her life. What should have been a story full of permanent consequences for all three women basically resets to the status quo which existed at the beginning of the episode, as if nothing had happened at all. And I guess nothing really has.

Warning: Spoilers
Legendary actresses Eileen Brennan and Celeste Holm guest star in The Love That Lies, which is an okay entry in season eight, which is the final season. I must admit I sometimes get Eileen Brennan mixed up with Ellyn Burstyn who starred in The Exorcist.

Anyway, this episode is about motherhood and what is a true mother and so on. This is an ethereal episode of Magnum, P. I., and it's not for everyone. I guess one of the good things about this episode was seeing the sunny streets and so on. Rick in a dress was hilarious for sure.

The Love That Lies is not the best episode but still it's worth watching once.
