In an homage to Hollywood's classic whodunit mysteries, a 1940's Magnum investigates the murder of a newspaper publisher, William Tyler Maxfield. Magnum must disentangle the mystery while contending with the hostile Inspector Wolf. The evidence: Footprints in dust, a piece of broken teacup, a miniature dog statuette. The suspects: Alicia, the young, beautiful, romantically starved wife. Christine, the young, beautiful, spoiled, rebellious daughter eager to be free from her father's control. Myron Bentley, a minister secretly married to Christine, with a past he'd rather keep hidden. And finally, Sam Caldwell, Maxwell's attorney, cold and hostile, who seems altogether too eager to push Magnum off the case. Before digging too deeply, a mysterious file on Bentley's past shows up at Magnum's office. Not long after, Bentley follows. Determined to claim the papers, Bentley confronts Magnum and is shot by an unknown gunman.
