Its a TV show. Why are people really so nit picky. None of its legit Army. Just sit back and enjoy it. Blah blah sniper can't shoot blah blah officer with enlisted....for crist sake Henry wears a fishing hat with his rank on it.

Great Episode Losey Sniper
reconty-1701724 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I remember watching this episode when I was a kid and I loved how the helicopter came in and saved the day. It put in me the desire to fly helicopters or at least be a crew chief/ door gunner. I'm glad to say I've been blessed to do both. What a great show!

The beginning of the Hawkeye show
70s_Connoisseur18 June 2023
The show starts with lady's man Hawkeye preparing for a picnic with a nurse. Frank and Margaret are also out enjoying the day. Frank is preparing to practice shooting his pistol. As Hawkeye is rounding second base with the nurse, a shot is heard the scares both of them. Hawkeye marches over to Frank yelling because he believes Frank almost shot him. Frank and Margaret deny it because he hasn't fired a shot. Hawkeye demands Frank give him the gun when another shot is fired, this time from a confirmed sniper. From here it becomes the 'Hawkeye Show'. Hawkeye takes control of post-op and decides how to get the wounded inside. Hawkeye uses his special forces skills and bravery to sneak into the mess hall to capture the sniper. But not before giving his lame 'I don't give a damn' speech. Unfortunately it was only Radar. Finally, Hawkeye goes out to confirm if the sniper is still alive after help arrives via a helicopter with a gunner. He finds the sniper shot but alive and starts first aid. Hawkeye save the day. There is no question why Wayne Rogers and McLean Stevenson got the heck off that show. This was only one of several storylines that had everyone bowing to the emperor Pierce.

Why Did the Helicopter Leave Without Confirmation of Its Mission?
Hitchcoc26 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
A sniper begins firing on the 4077th, stopping all activity and forcing people to flee for their lives. Henry and Radar are trapped in the shower. Others have created makeshift barriers, but the bullets keep coming through parts of the walls. An effort to silence him, him using a white flag fails. To complicate things, an ambulance comes with six seriously injured patients. Pleas for help from the military postpone action until the next day. Frank has a gun and goes all macho when he is under no threat, but when the bullets fly, he is useless. Eventually, helicopter comes and fires on the sniper, continuous machine gun fire. They take off and a white flag is seen. Where did this come from? It would seem that this guy is so shot up (and he is) that even to use a shirt or get a long stick to use would be just about impossible. Also, why did the helicopter leave when the guy is obviously still alive. I know that the show is anti-war and all human life is sacred, but the sniper's mission is to kill anyone he can. Hawkeye is a bit too much sometime. What if this guy had succeeded in killing his friends or colleagues? The fact that he could go out and bring the guy in (and that he was still alive) stretches the realm of believability.

A lost sniper
elo-equipamentos8 April 2017
I started watching Mash in this year and after some episodes that l enjoyed and others no so much, but the Sniper isn't so good, to many crazy situations, some gags, however l pay attention on new Lieutenent the beauty and young Teri Garr who Hawkeye trying (as always) making love, in the final they discovered that the Sniper is only a sixteen soldier!!!

Radar
safenoe12 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The Sniper, from season two, is very famous for Radar's behind being briefly visible. In some ways I think maybe this inspired Michael Douglas to bare his backside in the steamy thriller, Basic Instinct, released 20 years later. So well done to Gary Burghoff (who played Radar) for inspiring Michael Douglas!

Teri Garr, who later became a superstar, played Lt. Suzanne Marquette, and Kellye Nakahara continues her important role as Lt. Kellye Yamato, RN. Anyway, I'm enjoying reflecting on the early seasons of M*A*S*H (and the later seasons of course), thanks to the M*A*S*H Matter podcast hosted by superfan Ryan Patrick and Jeff Maxwell, who played Igor.

Worst sniper in the history of snipers?
slkellygoo17 February 2017
I used to watch and love this show as a kid, including many memorable episodes such as this one. Now, re-watching 30-40 years later... I can't believe how bad some of these premises are, and worse how badly they're executed. Just generally, for a sniper to have a wide open killing field with dozens of unprotected, unaware targets at the beginning of his siege and not score a single kill is just ludicrous. Yeah, it's prime-time comedy, nobody wants to harsh it down, but really? Then, just endless little things... Radar is in the same shower as Col Blake - hasn't it been established that there are officer's and enlisted facilities? They should not be sharing the same shower. When Hawkeye (and Frank) go out at night... nobody thought to turn the outside lights off? Yet, our sniper pays them no heed. But.... when they're in the mess tent after "ambushing" Radar, a lit match held by Frank draws fire??? I get, in the spirit of the time, this was plain and simply anti-war propaganda, exalting the heroic anti-war Hawkeye over the cowardly chicken-hawk Frank. But even allowing that, some 40+ years later, the writing just feels lazy. It was acceptable simply to drive an agenda home at the expense of telling a coherent narrative.

The one where a soldier fires on the camp
jarrodmcdonald-124 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode could have been developed better. First, I think it starts with a strong premise, because there is a bit of mystery involved in the beginning. Someone is firing on the camp, catching everyone off guard, but who is it and why is this happening now? Initial shots occur when Hawkeye is enjoying an outdoor picnic with an attractive lieutenant (Teri Garr). Notice how Hawkeye never canoodles with any plain Janes?

In some ways the ideas for this story connect with a previous story in which a 'Charlie' was flying overhead and targeting the 4077th. But unlike the earlier episode in which that person failed to hit his target, the sniper in this instance is succeeding at hitting the camp and disrupting the normal flow of business.

In our next episode we will see what happens when a flu epidemic affects everyone, but here they must band together to deal with a much different issue. They are restricted from moving freely about the camp and must set up barricades. In one memorable scene, Radar is thrown for a loop in the process of taking a shower. His towel comes off, exposing some of Gary Burghoff's backside, a rare instance of network TV nudity.

I do like how these stories unite the main characters, and how we see them eventually regain a sense of 'normalcy' so they can resume operations. What I don't really care for is that the sniper turns out to be firing on everyone because he thought the 4077th was where General MacArthur was set up. I just found that part a bit implausible.
