- The 8th Army commends the 4077 for the 72-hour ordeal they withstood. However, all requests for overtime are denied. Even the good Father is exhausted. All Hawkeye and BJ want is a shower and sleep. But, the Boston bassoon wants to blow his French horn, loudly. Winchester is no good with his horn and all his melodies are out of tune. He wont stop even when BJ and Hawkeye resist vehemently. Winchester will play his horn as it the only thing keeping him sane in Korea. Hawkeye and BJ refuse to use soap and water until the blowhard stops polluting the air. Soon, the duo start stinking up the camp with their body odor. The nurses start avoiding BJ and Hawkeye as they are "aromatic". They stink up the OR as well, but still refuse to get into a shower.. Houlihan wants Winchester to give up the horn, but he also refuses. Winchester wants a change of quarters to stop playing, and Potter suggests that he bunks with the enlisted men.. Winchester again refuses. Hawkeye and BJ are banned from the mess tent, the whole unit signed a petition to that effect. They are given a table outside. Mulcahy also avoids the duo. When reminded that Jesus ate with the lepers, he replies that Jesus was a good sport. When Winchester wont stop, BJ and Hawkeye cobble up drums and start their own racket to drown out Winchester's noise.
Soon, The whole camp is tired of the battle of "the air" so Margaret kicks it into high gear. She commands 3 waves of forces designed to eliminate all of the problem. The first wave of attack washes BJ and Hawkeye with a hose. The 2nd wave of attack dumps soap on them and lathers them off. The 3 wave takes Winchester's horn and crushes it under an army jeep.
Colonel Potter tries to deal with a suicidal GI, Pvt. Saunders (Jordan Clarke), who lost part of his face (his rifle backfired and the bolt caught him in the face) and requires plastic surgery. Saunders wont allow the nurses to change his bandages, as he doesn't want anyone looking at his damaged face. He doesn't want to go home to face his girlfriend. He says looks are very important to her. Saunders tries suicide by eating a bunch of sleeping tablets (he broke into the medicines cabinet when the nurse was gone to the supply room for a few minutes) and is saved by the doctors. He again tries by inhaling sleeping gas, and this time Potter dares him to do it properly and ups the dosage. Survival instincts kick in and Saunders realizes that he really doesn't want to end his life.
After stopping the final suicide attempt, Colonel Potter sentences Major Houlihan and her army to the Officers' Club...and drinks on The Swamp Rats and Major Winchester. Winchester commissions Sang Nu (Richard Lee Sung) to build him a new horn, but he forgets to provide a mouth piece and the instrument is useless.
