- Hawkeye is outraged when a visiting sergeant brings his 'moose' to camp - a young Korean woman he has bought to keep as his personal servant.
- Cultures clash as the Swamp Rat Trio (Hawkeye, Spearchucker and Trapper) encounter bigoted Sgt. Baker who "owns" what the Army calls a "moose" or a young girl named Young Hi, who does all of his personal chores and domestic work. From musume (Japanese for girl) a moose is basically, a slave. Ho-Jon and Radar try to explain how poor families sell female children like Young Hi and it is considered a duty and an honor for the girl to help her family. Henry is not able to help and Baker cannot be bribed nor bought. Young Hi is a very personable young woman with an agile mind (Young Hi tells the doctors she does not make "monkey business" with Baker) and the doctors want to see Young Hi make something of her life. When the stakes are high for the 4077, the means must be commensurately low. Poker, anyone?—LA-Lawyer
- Hawkeye and his mates are indignant to find Sergeant Baker, on mission from another regiment, enjoys the devoted domestic services of a 'moose', from Japanese 'musume' (maid), Young Hi, whose penniless family sold her into this denture for $500, a fair price and common practice as Ho-Jon and Radar explain. Hawkeye fails to pull rank or get the colonel to intervene, Baker not being in their military jurisdiction. However he wins her at poker, and Baker leaves her behind, but she refuses to return home, insisting to become Hawk's servant, jumping off a truck to Seoul. Only when her brother -still a knave- Benny arrives, she returns with him, but only to be sold again, this time with a different attitude and outcome.—KGF Vissers
- Sergeant Baker (Paul Jenkins) stops by the 4077th with his "moose"; a Korean girl named Young-Hi (Virginia Li), whom he "bought" from her family for $500.00. Baker makes Young-Hi to carry all his gear, unpack it, run a bath for him, shine his shoes and all other menial jobs that he can think for her. The term "moose" derives from the Japanese word for daughter, "musume", and refers to female servants of servicemen, who may be treated almost as slaves. Young-Hi is just Baker's servant and not a sex slave. Hawkeye speaks with Blake to order Baker to release Young-Hi. Blake can order Baker, but he will simply pick her back up, 5 mins after he leaves the unit. Thats not a permanent solution. Haweye speaks to Young-Hi who confirms that she is not sleeping with Baker, but she doesn't want to run away as that would bring dishonor to her family. She can only leave when Baker releases her. Capt. 'Spearchucker' Jones (Timothy Brown) is Haweye and McIntyre's dorm mate.
Hawkeye Pierce is outraged and tries to convince Baker to let the girl go free. But Baker refuses to release Young-Hi as he knows Hawkeye is a temporary commission in the army. He even tries to by Young-Hi off Baker for $600, but he is not interested in selling her. Eventually, he plays poker with Baker (and cheats with a little help from Radar.). Radar is spying on Baker's cards from outside Haweye's tent and relays the information to Hawkeye via an earpiece that Baker cant see. Hawkeye cleans out Baker for $2200, including a $1200 IOU. Hawkeye insists that Baker settle the IoU in cash.
Baker agrees to trade Young-Hi for the debt he runs up. However, he explains to Young-Hi that she now belongs to Hawkeye, rather than that she is free (as was Pierce's intent). Young-Hi doesn't want to go home and is excited to work for Hawkeye. Hawkeye enjoys the service provided by Young-Hi. she cleans and arranges the entire swamp. Pierce first attempts to get rid of Young-Hi by sending her on a truck to Seoul, but she gets off when the truck stops for gas and hitchhikes back to the 4077th.
Eventually Pierce, Jones and McIntyre decide to "demoosify" Young-Hi and teach her how to be a person who deserves to be well-treated and not subservient. Hawkeye teaches her to speak like a normal person and not like a moose. He teaches her to look people in the eye, and not look down when spoken to. She is given some basic training as a nurse. They soon meet the head of Young-Hi's family and discover that he is Young-Hi's little brother Benny (Craig Jue) and that he immediately plans to sell her again. Initially, Young-Hi agrees with Benny out of loyalty to her family but then returns, having told Benny to "shove off".
In the end, Young-Hi is enrolled in convent school in Seoul. In the last scene of the episode, Pierce, McIntyre and Spearchucker Jones receive a letter from her. Roger Wilco.
