When man is put to the ultimate test, will he do what is best for the one he loves?—LA-Lawyer
- Among the wounded arriving at the hospital one day is a five-year-old boy, Kim (Edgar Miller). Trapper has a 5 yr old girl back home. As Henry passes out in the Mess Tent, the guys tease Radar about his huge appetite. Hawkeye asks Radar to find out about Kim's parents and whether they are missing too. He is tasked to call Seoul, red Cross, MPs and the local villages as well.
Radar tries to find the little boy's family. Hawkeye reads smut to young Kim (to keep him entertained, and plus Kim didn't understand any English) (The entire Post-Op ward is listening to Hawkeye and wants him to continue reading the book) as the rest of the staff fights over his care. Houlihan says that the boy needs a womanly touch and takes him under her care. The hospital staff believe him to be an orphan (Radar drew a blank on Kim, nobody in the vicinity or the US Army knows anything about him or his family).
Henry calls Sister Theresa's orphanage to find out more about Kim (he believes that the 4077 MASH is no place for a kid, and wants the orphanage to take him in). Trapper and Hawkeye are disappointed that Henry has decided to send Kim away. Trapper is especially taken with the child, and makes plans to adopt him. Trapper writes to his wife about adopting Kim; Trapper's wife is delighted. Everyone at 4077 (but Frank) falls in love with Kim. He sleeps over with Radar and with Margaret, he helps Henry at work, Klinger plays ball with him and Trapper makes toys for Kim. Houlihan even sends Frank away when he arrives for his nocturnal activities with her, as she doesn't want to part with Kim.
Even Henry falls in love with Kim, and the entire staff conspires to keep him at the camp for longer than necessary (rather than sending him on to the care of an orphanage) so they can care for him themselves. Henry doesn't want Kim to go away either and tells the orphanage that Kim is running a temperature. Trapper gets a replay from his wife Louise who gives her consent to adopt Kim. Trapper feels this was his purpose in Korea. Before Kim, his life in Korea had no meaning.
One afternoon, while Frank and Margaret are supposed to be watching Kim, the boy wanders off into a minefield. Hawkeye and Trapper arrive to help. Hawkeye gets a map for the minefield, while Trapper keeps the kid occupied, so he doesn't move again. Henry arrives to help read the maps, but ends up reading the wrong and thus Trapper is also stranded in the middle of the minefield. A helicopter-assisted rescue is successful (The copter picks Trapper first, who then picks up Kim), and once on safe ground, Trapper hugs the boy, to the delight of gathering 4077th personnel. Meanwhile, a truck pulls up, driven by Sister Teresa, who runs the local orphanage. Her passenger-a young Korean woman-sees Kim and rushes to him. Sister Teresa explains that the woman came to her, looking for her missing son. As the three drive away, Kim waves goodbye to Trapper.
