Very Good Episode & Very Much In Formula
DKosty12324 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This is an episode which is done many times during the run of the series and done very effectively. It takes a small problem (Hawkeye needing boots) & then sets up a log set of circumstances & people which have to fall into place in order for Hawkeye to get what he wants.

The relationships of about half the camp seem to get involved & a lot of people have their personal problems somehow get involved in Hawkeye getting new boots. This type of theme is used more than once, but this is one of the strongest examples of it as Hawkeye, Trapper, & Henry Blake are all involved along with Frank, Hot Lips, the camp Dentist, & a seemingly more & more complex chain of people and events which all have to fall in place to solve the initial problem.

Then, just when everything is seemingly set, it all falls apart with humorous results.

Walking is Made for Boots.
ExplorerDS678926 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Has there ever been something you've wanted so badly you'd go to any lengths to get it? We've all been there, and in this case, Hawkeye Pierce is already there. There's a big gaping hole in the bottom of one of his boots and he desperately needs a new pair. Amongst all the supply snafus, no new boots have surfaced, so he and Trapper go talk to the surly supply sergeant, Zale. He isn't very helpful and complains about his teeth, saying he needs bridgework. So Hawkeye and Trapper go to visit the dentist, Futterman, who is obsessed with Japan. Hawk and Trap agree to see about getting a 3-day pass from Henry if he will agree to look at Zale's teeth. Henry, meanwhile, is having a problem of his own: Major Houlihan is going to report him to General Mitchell. Why? Because Henry is a very laxed commander who doesn't follow her idea of what a commissioned officer should be. She's just a total bitch who makes her nurses' lives hell. If Henry had any guts, he'd report her instead. But anyway, Hawkeye makes a deal to get Hot Lips off Henry's back if he will approve a pass for Futterman. Will Hot Lips back off? Only if Frank gets a birthday party (with presents). Hawkeye draws the line there and decides he doesn't need boots bad enough to throw a party for Ferret Face...but a nice trample through a mud puddle quickly gets him to change his mind.

Hawkeye and Trapper ask Radar for help with the party, and he says he'll help if they get him a date with Nurse Murphy. Murphy says if they can get her a hair dryer, she'll even go out with Radar O'Reilly. Oh the irony. The only person in camp to have a hair dryer is Klinger, and he won't part with it unless the doctors can get him a Section 8. All he needs if four officers' signatures, so Hawk and Trap decide to try their luck at the party to see if Frank will be buttered up enough. So the party kicks off, Frank is happy as a clam, and then the Section 8 paper is passed before him. The big jerk vehemently refuses to sign and tears it up, thus unraveling the entire escapade! Klinger takes back his hair dryer, Murphy snubs Radar who takes back the cake thus ending the party, thus making Hot Lips go through with her report about Henry who then revokes Futterman's pass who then refuses to do Zale's bridgework who refuses to expedite Hawkeye's boots. What a bunch of A-holes. Hawkeye didn't even get points for trying! Oh well, at least until the new boots arrive, he can wear a golf bag. Fore!

This episode is one of my favorites. It's funny, it's intriguing, and I genuinely feel Hawkeye deserved new boots for everything he and Trapper went through. It shows how selfish everybody was, wanting something for something. I wonder if Father Mulcahy had been in this episode, could he have balanced everything out? This was the first of several appearances of Zelmo Zale, a surly, unlikeable supply sergeant who will get into many fights with Klinger. So anyway, if you like the show, you like Hawkeye, or even if you don't like him, this is still a great episode to check out. Had this one been made in Season 9, he would've gotten the boots, no problem. Everybody was friends by that point.

Quid pro Quo
Hitchcoc1 March 2015
Not much new here. It's the same plot used on numerous occasions, going back to the long underwear saga. Hawkeye needs new boot; his are full of holes and it is horrible outside. It involves with a series of requests, beginning with needing Hot Lips to back off on her letter to the General concerning Henry's incompetence. Of course, in order to get this, the guys must throw a birthday party for Frank Burns. Then another series of "if's." Everything becomes a delicate balance in a kind of "House that Jack Built" thing or, in this arena, a set of falling dominoes. It's entertaining. Once again, it requires a date with a nurse who has no interest in doing this (unless she gets something in return). If you don't overlook the lack of originality, you may enjoy this.

Amusingly Special!!
ellisel9 September 2007
The opening scene of "For Want Of A Boot" consisted of Captain Pierce wanting a new pair of boots. Captains Pierce and McIntyre have a discussion in "The Swamp" to find out whom would supply Them new boots. In the opening clip of this episode, Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake was going on report for being a farcical administrator at the 4077th ... specifically for not doing his job in relation to the nursing duties. The two of them would venture into Major Houlihan's tent to reconsider sending the report to General Mitchell ... if they gave in to a surprise birthday party for Major Burns in the mess tent.

The trek for finding new boots would begin immediately. Sergant Zale wanted his gums taken care of in Dr. Futterman's tent after his vacation. Dr. Futterman wanted to obtain a three-day pass to Tokyo. Corporal Klinger wanted Majors Burns and Houlihan to sign his Section Eight papers to obtain a discharge from the Army. Nurse Murphy wanted Corporal O'Reilly in her tent to plug in the hair dryer. Everything was in place ... or so it seem!!

At the birthday party, Majors Burns and Houilhan would obviously balk at signing Corporal Klinger's discharge papers. Nurse Murphy acted disappointed and shocked at Corporal O'Reilly's (lack of) appearance in her tent at the assigned time. Major Houlihan would then send her report to General Mitchell for Lieutenant Colonel Blake's court martial. Blake would rip Dr. Futterman's three-day pass to Tokyo. And finally, the snowball effect would (obviously) bite Dr. Futterman and Sergeant Zale in the rear ... for which Captain Pierce would not obtain his boots. A 16 out of 10!! Tons of spontaneity and wit!! Enjoy!! A++!! The zaniest M*A*S*H episode ever during its eleven-year run ... especially from the 1973-1974 Television Season.

Boots

Warning: Spoilers
I think I've seen very episode of M*A*S*H at least once, and For Want of a Boot is once that I've seen several times. Anyway, For Want of a Boot has us feeling empathetic towards Hawkeye, who struggles to get a boot without holes, and sadly it sends sadly.

Sheila Lauritsen returns as Nurse Sheila, and I would love for her to be a guest on M*A*S*H Matters, a superb podcast hosted by superfan Ryan Patrick and Jeff Maxwell, who started playing Igor in season two. They should also interview Susanne Zenor who played Nurse Murphy. Anyway, this episode stands the test of time with the boots and all.
