- Newsreels, including one of the ultimate hero, Sir Winston Churchill, praise the Americans and the combined UN efforts in Korea. The Americans have at most 3 or 4 battalions in Korea. American destroyers pound the North Korean coastline with a constant barrage of rocket fire. Potter is having trouble getting any advance notice of what kind of casualties the 4077th can expect. A batch of South Korean infantry wounded hits the unit.
Politicians appeal to the general public to donate blood to support their troops at the front. President Truman wants the students of USA to become worthy citizens of the country. Klinger tries to find logic in Army triplicate (of keeping records of the personal possessions of injured soldiers), looting wounded soldiers (one soldier was robbed during triage at the 4077th) and sink scrubbing (he cant understand what that is for). But he sees hope when the doctors fill the same sink with water and pull hot phosphorus from a soldier's leg with sulfa and copper sulfate. If they operate in open air, the phosphorus will ignite and burn the soldier alive.
One soldier promised God to become a priest if he survived. But now, he asks for Mulcahy's permission to renege on his promise. Mulcahy is happy to oblige. The French army has started a war to drive out communists from Vietnam. Hawkeye leaves a sponge inside a patient and Frank wont leave him alone and gets on his case every opportunity he gets.
The Chinese enter the Korean war with 33 divisions or over 300,000 soldiers. They hit the entire UN line in Korea. As the fighting takes a clear turn for the worse, the newsreels show a carefree, dancing, America at play. Gen MacArthur is having grand parades in New York. A new and unending wave of injured soldiers hit the 4077 MASH. Radar breaks his glasses when he slips on blood inside a bus. Hawkeye asks Radar to check if some casualties can be redirected to the other MASH units, since the 4077th is slammed completely and is running low on supplies..
Radar is on the scrounge for plasma, peering through his broken glasses as his tent leaks from the rain. Radar finally gets lucky when he trades some toilet paper for plasma, with another unit. Margaret charges into the men's shower, pleading that Potter not send her and her nurses away from increased fighting. Army is all she knows. She was born in an army hospital and followed her dad to every post he was assigned to. Houlihan promises to take care of her own nurses. Mrs. Aga Khan wants a hot dog (Rita Hayworth married Aga Khan and craves for a hot dog after her wedding); the surgeons are eating cold cuts and operating without gloves. BJ is frustrated that a hospital has run out of gloves. Life goes on back in the US.
An exhausted 4077 is awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation for service above and beyond. Potter returns the favor when he charges in on Margaret's shower... he thanks her and the nurses for staying!
