Gary Burghoff and Harry Morgan in M*A*S*H (1972)

Goofs

Change of Command

M*A*S*H

Edit

Continuity

In this episode from Season 4, Col. Potter is introduced as assuming command over the 4077 in September of 1952. Later, in Season 9, Episode 6, everyone at the MASH (including Potter himself) is seen celebrating New Year's of 1951.
When Radar is hanging pictures in Colonel Potter's office, he tells him to straighten the picture of Lily Bell., which he does. But, in the next shot that picture is shown over Radar's shoulder at his original angle. When they turn back to the wall, the picture is straightened again.
When Col Potter and Radar are hanging the photos in his office, Col Potter identifies one horse as a stallion named "Royal King". At the end of the episode he identifies that same photo as a mare named "Sylvia Bee."
Radar announces for all officers to report to the commanding officers office, however only Hawkeye, BJ, Margaret, and Fr. Mulcahy are seen in the office. Frank Burns had gone AWOL, which explains his absence, but the entire nursing staff should have been there also, since they all have the tank of Lieutenant, the same as Fr. Mulcahy.
In the scene before the end, Potter, Hawkeye and BJ are singing inside the Swamp tent. Next is a cut to outside the tent, but the singing has suddenly changed key.

Factual errors

Throughout the episode, Loretta Swit's fingernails are over an inch long. No nurse, especially a head nurse, would have fingernails that long.
As Col Potter is unpacking in his office he tells Radar that he got his Good Conduct Medal in World War I. The Army GCM wasn't established until June 1941 and wasn't made retroactive to World War I. Potter states in a later episode that he became a surgeon in 1933. He could never have been awarded a GCM for WW I since it was only established in 1941 after he became an officer and was no longer eligible for the award.

Miscellaneous

Col Potter states that his friends call him stud but it's never brought up again.
In the opening scene in Frank's new office, Frank says to Hot Lips, 'I'll teach those dirty little unlisted rats to love me.' The line should have been 'enlisted rats.'
Margret must have been really tired after surgery as she was sleeping in her uniform and boots when Major Burns knocks on her door,

Character error

Frank calls Igor a Sergeant when in the mess tent. At the time, he was only a Private and was never ranked higher than Corporal.
Col. Potter states he was 15 years old when he enlisted in WW1. America joined WW1 in 1917 which means he would have been born in 1902. Taking command of the 4077 in 1952 would make his age as 50 years yet he says he's seen dodges like Klinger's attempts for 40 years yet he would have only been in the army for 35 years.
When Col. Potter arrives at the 4077th, he finds Radar sitting shirtless, getting a tan and ignoring the Colonel's horn. Radar, of all people, would never have been caught unaware like that, especially since he already knew about the Colonel's pending arrival, and would have known approximately what time he was scheduled to get there.

He knows when choppers are arriving before anyone else but does not sense the colonel's arrival.
