The Frigid North
Hitchcoc8 April 2015
This is one of many episodes that take place in the winter in Korea. Everyone is freezing and it is necessary to keep the casualties warm. One man in particular is suffering from intense hypothermia. The second plot is a huge down jacket that is sent to Charles by his family. In a moment of kindness, he gives Margaret his gloves and then decides he wants them back. Everyone envies it and, of course, Charles is a complete ass about it. A third plot is Klinger, who, while on guard duty, finds himself deaf when a series of land mines go off due to the cold. All these things tie together as Radar is forced to move all the heaters into the hospital.

Hamming it up

Warning: Spoilers
While I enjoyed some aspects of this episode; especially Father Francis Mulcahy, and Colonel Potter. But this episode suffers from poor direction. In my opinion this cast tended to think they were acting on Broadway or in opera where over acting is necessary to make sure people in the back rows get the idea. But since this television it just looks silly some times. In this story line the actors are supposed to be suffer in the cold in Korea where it can get exceedingly cold. I was part of MASH unit in Germany, and spent two winters living in tents in northern Germany, and along the Checkoslovakian border. The actors endless going on, and silly fretting about the cold was tedious. Yes, you have to work at staying warm, but this cast, and director, don't seem to know how to do it in a convincing way. Also the sub plot about Charles coat was just plain irritating to watch. Not because of Charles, but because of the way the other characters reactions were written in close knit units like MASH units this kind of constant bickering about things that another has found or been sent to keep warm. It's my experience most are glad to see at least someone got lucky. That's not to say that item might not disappear if not watched over. My whole point is this cast including writers and directors frequently damage and otherwise good story by hammy over the top performances. One of the few cast members to almost never to fall into this behavior is William Christopher.

Many reviewers

Warning: Spoilers
Many M*A*S*H episodes had (up until I started posting reviews) only one review, by Hitchcoc. This one already has four reviews, with two loving it, and two not so much. The subplot has Klinger losing his hearing after land mines exploded due to the freezing weather. It's a twist at the end regarding his hearing.

Cold?

Hawkeye is from MAINE. His father is a doctor. Why in the world doesn't he contact Dad to have him send some cold weather clothing and gear. Maine is lousy with it,

One of the worst episodes
shanphil1 July 2018
This episode is bad. It's supposed to be cold and windy outside. There's the sound of the wind, but the leaves on the trees aren't moving an inch. They couldn't afford a fan? Their breath isn't seen. I guess I get that-Southern California is rarely cold. But those aren't the biggest problems. The biggest problems are that there's no flow to the writing, the jokes aren't funny, and the stories aren't interesting. Ugh!

Californians do not know how to pretend that it's cold

Another attempt by Hollywood/TVland to pretend it's cold but fails miserably. Those of us who live in the cold know that the trees do not have leaves, human breath is visible when you talk and frost appears on many surfaces.
