Guest starring Mister Lucille Ball (Gary Morton) this is not the worst Season 2 episode but it's certainly one of the most boring. Having been married to Lucy just over two years when this was aired, it's obvious Morton is no Desi Arnaz. He is too self-aware, doesn't seem to understand sitcom rhythm and delivers his lines in that typical Borscht Belt comedian way, which is understandable. The dialog sounds like nightclub patter ("That's no lady, that's Lucy"). The pro golfers appearing in the episode were likely his idea and they fare not much better.
Watching golf is like watching paint dry and the tournament scene drags on and on. An obvious laugh track was used for good reason. I was counting the minutes until it was over. I actually stopped watching the actors and instead kept checking out all the bouffant hairdos on the background extras - that was more entertaining.
At least Lucy and Viv looked cute in their golf togs. Viv's purple pullover was more flattering than Lucy's celery cardigan, though. There's a scene involving a runaway golf cart at the end that merely rips off the lawnmower stunt from "Lucy Raises Tulips" back in 1957. I have to wonder if the final line of the episode was a dig at Desi. Gary takes Lucy in his arms and exclaims "Lucy, I LOVE YOU!" as we fade out.
Terribly boring episode - this one must have been a birthday present from Lucy to Gary. It also proves how effortlessly charismatic and natural Desi Arnaz was in front of the camera in comparison to Gary Morton.
