Dishonest Indian agent Oscar Vale uses a few renegade Indians on his Montana reservation to rob an army payroll. Vale arranges for delivery of brand new bolt action Enfield rifles from Canadian gun runners. These rifles are manufactured in England and aren't available in the United States yet. Vale wants to arm the renegades with these rifles for his own profit. When Vale's Indian assistant Gray Wolf misses The Ranger and Tonto with his shot, he leaves the Enfield behind before fleeing. The Ranger immediately recognizes it as a weapon that must be being smuggled in from Canada. When Vale demonstrates familiarity with it, The Ranger suspects him as the leader of the renegades. But how to expose him and confiscate those new rifles? The bolt action Enfield wasn't widely distributed until after 1900, so putting it in this episode is an anachronism. But no need to let that spoil an entertaining episode. Watch for the skillful running mount by the Ranger near the end of the episode. It was probably a stuntman, but Clayton Moore was a pretty good at stunts himself and he could have done it. But he probably let the stuntman get his payday. Walter Coy plays Colonel Dower. He is best remembered for his role the following year as John Wayne's brother in the classic western "The Searchers."
