[first lines]
Adam Shepherd : [narrating] I was writing an article about Christmas, specifically the sounds of Christmas, but I wanted was not the sleigh bells and noise of ornaments and toys, but the real magic of Christmas... the sounds of faith, hope and good will. It also seemed like a good time to catch up on my Christmas shopping.

Sales Girl : Can I help you?
Adam Shepherd : Yeah, please. I'm looking for a present for a little girl.
Sales Girl : Anything special?
Adam Shepherd : Well, she's a special little girl.
Sales Girl : Your daughter?
Adam Shepherd : My niece... a real doll.
Sales Girl : Well, how about a real doll... housewife doll, fairy doll, princess doll, angel doll, talking doll, dancing doll...?
Adam Shepherd : Angel doll! I'll look at your angel doll.
Sales Girl : We've had a run on angels, but I'll fly up to the stockroom. I'll be right back.
Adam Shepherd : [thinking] Fairy doll, dancing doll, angel doll... ah, the sounds of Christmas - the real sounds, the deep sounds. You can hear them if you really listen.

[last lines]
Sales Girl : Sir? Here's your angel.
Adam Shepherd : [lost in a reverie] Yeah... I'm listening to them.
Sales Girl : I beg your pardon.
Adam Shepherd : Oh, I'm sorry.
Sales Girl : Your angel?
Adam Shepherd : [looking at the angel doll] Isn't she lovely?
Sales Girl : Shall I put it in the box?
Adam Shepherd : Oh, no. You can never lock an angel in a box.
Adam Shepherd : [hands the salesgirl some money] There. Now you keep the change. Oh... Merry Christmas.
Sales Girl : Merry Christmas.
Adam Shepherd : [speaking to the audience] And a Merry Christmas to you, too.
