Timothy is a little blind boy who thinks he is above everyone and acts like he isn't blind. He doesn't want to be at the blind school, so he refuses to participate in anything, even choir, although he sings well. Joe Kagan is working in Sleepy Eye, so he stops by the school and visits Timothy when he can. He's also interested in Hester Sue, who's about to marry a funeral director. Joe doesn't approve because the man is not right for Hester Sue and she doesn't love him, and he tries to show her the error of her ways before it's too late.
