James "Grizzly" Adams(Dan Haggerty) encounters Army captain Ulysses S. Grant(played by Mark Slade) who is in the valley doing a census count on wild horses and burros which the army may need to use. Upon learning of a book being written by Grant about how to live off the animals, Adams tries his best to persuade Grant how misguided this is by pointing out how more practical and time-saving it is to live off plants, berries, and roots, and Mad Jack(Denver Pyle) even wrote a book with over 200 animal-free recipes. Grant also learns about chopping down only dead trees as well. Fine episode cleverly inserts future historical figure Ulysses S. Grant into the series that teaches alternatives to killing forest animals for food.
