- Col. Benteen asks Earp to help with a string of murders in the outlaw area called Robber's Roost. The victims are small time rustlers who also own small ranches. Earp agrees to investigate and finds himself working with outlaws.
- A string of ambush murders in the Robber's Roost area forces Col. Benteen at Fort Lewis, Colorado to ask Earp for help. With Apaches threatening, he can't afford the time or men to investigate. He has received a letter from Elzie Rash asking for help so Earp starts there. After his wife reads a letter of introduction from Benteen, Rash trusts Earp. Earp noticed a man eying the Rash ranch when he arrived so he and Elzie leave to track him. After a few shots are traded, Elzie and his horse are slightly wounded. He takes the horses back for fresh ones and treatment while Earp continues on foot. They find another victim in his house and Earp meets the posse on the man's trail made up of outlaw ranchers. Earp has them keep the killer out of the lowlands while he and Elzie catch up and trade shoots again with the killer. Earp and the killer are both wounded but the killer leaves behind his saddle bags and a book with a hint as to who hired him. Earp decides to visit the rancher suspected named Moyer who ignores Earp. A trap set by Mrs. Rush kills the actual killer. Earp now faces the question of whether the outlaw posse will follow his orders or do things their way.—Anonymous
