Only wish I had an Uncle Billy
pensman3 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Morning at the Cleavers starts with a call, Ward sounds happy until the boys leave. Then he tells June that his Uncle Billy is coming for dinner, and we can tell something is up. When returning from school they notice a ritzy car and figure its company. Turns out it Uncle Billy who makes friends fast when he hands each boy ten dollars.

June wants Ward to take the money but Ward refuses. At dinner Uncle Billy entertains the boys with TALL tales that the boys just love. Edgar Buchanan is Uncle Billy and is pure Edgar Buchanan at his best just full of charm and laughs.

Billy promises to send Wally a rifle he shot a bear with; and Beaver is promised a bamboo pole and spinning real. Things are going well until Uncle Billy makes a fatal mistake: he tells the boys how he took their dad sailfish fishing in Mexico; a story Ward has just told June was a lot of baloney.

Now the stage is set. What will the boys do when they realize Uncle Billy is just a nice old blowhard? At some point, most of us realize the people we look up to have feet of clay.

Beaver sets his own stage when he heads down to the sporting goods store to wait for Uncle Billy. Wally sort of knows Uncle Billy is a fraud, but Beaver is a true believer. Wally goes to get Beaver and spills the beans. Beaver refuses to accept the truth and heads to Uncle Billy's hotel to confront him. Beaver finds him in the barbershop where he is sounding off to the staff about his exploits and realizes who Billy is.

But when Beaver gets home he demonstrates he understands Billy even better than Ward does. We learn Ward's father had three brothers, but of the family of four Billy was big kid all his life.

Beaver shows maturity in the end.

Warning: Spoilers
Wow. This episode and the next one called Teacher's Daughter seem like the show changed writers. After a few plain vanilla episodes in a row, they really came up with 2 great ones. This one is about Ward's brother who likes to tell tall tales about himself and promises he doesn't keep. Beaver really wants to believe in his Uncle Billy and goes to the sports store to meet Uncle Billy to receive a new rod and reel Billy has promised him but catches him telling tall tales in the barber shop and the people in there are "laughing in their stomachs" at Uncle Billy. Later Beaver tells his Dad not to yell at Uncle Billy for his lies and promises because Uncle Billy is like some of his schoolmates who does stuff like that to be liked. I used to teach high school and learned things from my students and this time Ward learned from his son, Beaver. Great episode.

Good learning story
pmike-1131212 August 2022
Beav gets another lesson on human behavior - this time a tall-story, windbag uncle. Ward handles it well (so does Beaver).

Unfortunately, we get another childish, pointless comment from michaelmazar. All his "reviews" are stupid - to use his 10-year-old verbiage.

Bravo Edgar Buchanan

A classic episode. June comes off looking really bad. Totally dumps on Uncle Billy because he's a little eccentric. Billy just likes to exaggerate. No hint that he's a bad person. Odd the Cleavers have an extra room. No invitation to uncle Billy to stay at their place. June's aunt Martha is nuttier than a fruit cake, and the Cleaver's roll out the red carpet for her. Ward's not allowed to show any disapproval. Just keeps shaking his head yes when it concerns Aunt Martha.

BEAVER at Its Best
MichaelMartinDeSapio19 September 2015
Every family has its "crazy uncle"; the Cleavers have Uncle Billy. An eccentric personality worthy of any picaresque character in literature, Uncle Billy (actually Wally and Beaver's great-uncle) boasts of exotic hunting exploits that never occurred, makes extravagant promises, and hands out bills of money like donuts. He is a high roller, a teller of tall tales and an all-around phoney - but a lovable phoney as played by colorful, gravel-voiced Edgar Buchanan. Beaver is enchanted by this figure, as any boy would be. But, in a poignant ending, he must experience the disillusionment of learning - the hard way - what sort of person Uncle Billy really is.

This is one of the truly great "Beavers," a near-serious drama to rival the third-season episode "Beaver and Andy." It shows Beaver traveling a trajectory from innocence to experience and wisdom, by way of an emotional crisis: discovering Billy's true nature at a hotel barber shop. "Uncle Billy" shows Beaver and Wally having to deal with an adult who is like a child in many ways. Ward and June are wary of the influence Uncle Billy might have on the boys, but at the same time want them to respect an elder relative; this is the central conflict.

Uncle Billy returned for a sequel episode in the final season ("Uncle Billy's Visit"); in that episode he is less of a rogue and more of an indulgent relative.

THE FAMOUS UNCLE BILLY EPISODE...
tcchelsey12 February 2024
The story goes that actor Edgar Buchanan was originally a dentist who got the acting bug. It was the best decision he ever made, gracing both the big and small screen for decades in memorable roles. This is one of them. Unfortunately, he only made a handful of appearances on the show, but all us kids will never forget Uncle Billy.

Billy is Ward's father's brother, who shows up to the Cleaver household to see how big Wally and Beave have gotten. Billy is a bachelor, apparently very successful in his own right, but a teller of TALL tales. The thing about this episode, it's a kid's dream because we all loved over the top characters.

That all said... producers and writers Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher went the extra mile, and gave this story a more poignant slant. I agree with the last reviewer. Wally seems to know the score about Uncle Billy, right off the bat, while Beave is a true believer in anythng he says, in fact, the more outrageous the better.

It takes a surprise visit to his hotel, to see Billy rattling off similar tales to strangers around him --and their expressions-- to kind of, sort of figure out who his uncle really is. Beave comes down to earth fast, yet another learning experience. It also saves a long father and son talk with Ward, ya think?

An unforgettable character study episode, and again thanks to Edgar Buchanan. Edgar may have also been instrumental in getting Hugh Beaumont to later appear on PETTICOAT JUNCTION, playing Steve's father, who is about to marry one of Kate's daughters in some terrific episodes. It's also a treat to see Hugh Beaumont in color, and still looking like Mr. Cleaver!

Recommended. From SEASON 4 remastered.

The Old Windbag

(*June to Wally quote*) - "What do you mean by messing around?"

Out of the blue Billy Cleaver (Ward's uncle) shows up in Mayfield and he decides to pay his nephew and his family a welcome visit.

Uncle Billy arrives for dinner and he is just full of stories of adventure to tell both Wally and Beaver.

Beaver is so impressed with Uncle Billy and he believes him when he makes a promise to buy Beaver a new fishing rod.

But, alas - The truth about Uncle Billy soon comes to light and Beaver is filled with all sorts of disillusionment.

What on Earth!
tamika-9375412 February 2024
How did they not school Beaver that he doesnt get to pout and demand presents. Sometimes adults just say things like that, and dont actually do what they promised but a well behaved kid doesnt act like he is owed a fishing reel.

Besides, the Beaver lies twice as much as Uncle Billy. Beaver lies almost as much as he breathes. And Wally often ends up lying to cover up for the Beaver.

June came off looking very bad, as she thinks Beaver has the right to expect a present.

June's Aunt Martha is a complete lunatic, and June expects people to humor her lunatic aunt at the expense of their sanity. I felt bad for Uncle Billy.
