Wally does not abandon his date; he is a gentleman
pensman12 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Wally is also graduating and June has decided to hold a party after the event. Just as Ward is explaining why Beaver should attend, Wally announces his class has arranged for an all-night party at the country club.

June is still upset and Gwen Rutherford isn't happy either; but Fred is all for it, he can trust his Clarence. Ward and June retreat for a talk. Ward delivers the news that Wally can go, but there is to be no drinking and the chaperons will call parents to inform them if their kids leave the premises.

Eddie is still studying his little black book before he decides on a date for the party. Lumpy is waiting to see who his father picks to go with him. Wally is planning on taking Kathy Gregory but her father has said no. Kathy asks Wally to come over and meet her parents. Maybe making a good impression will change their mind, but Wally figures to get them to like him, he will have to come across as Pat Boone. After hearing Roger Gregory harangue his daughter about boys, Wally is on target.

Even before Wally arrives Roger has decided he doesn't like him. Wally shows up in a suit. Have a cigarette, Wally doesn't smoke and never has. Wally was also an athlete: he played football and was on the swim team. When Wally tries to engage Mr. Gregory in conversation by mentioning he heard Mr. Gregory was a civil engineer. That lights up Mr. Gregory and it's clear he would talk on that all night, but the Mrs. shushes him. Finally, Mr. Gregory relents.

Everyone has arrived and the party seems to be going as planned. The kids dance and eat and dance, and the guys are ready to call it quits at 3:30. It actually goes fine, but as Wally and Kathy exit the party a drunk knocks Kathy into a fountain outside the entrance. Kathy is terrified as to how her father will react. When Wally and Kathy arrive at her house, Wally refuses to abandon her at the door. When he tries to explain to Mr. Gregory, he tells Wally he's some sort of delinquent and throws him out.

The next morning Wally is explaining to his parents about the drunk; and there is almost a flicker of doubt in Ward's and June's eyes. Beaver asked if they want Wally to blow up a balloon or something. I'm disappointed in Ward and June myself. Lumpy and Eddie stop by, Kathy has been grounded for a month. Hearing that, Wally takes off to talk with Mr. Gregory. It starts rocky but ends well; every parent would love to have a Wally as a son.

At the very end, Beaver wonders if graduating is worth it. Wouldn't it be great to stay in school forever and hide from the real world like teachers? I will try to present Wally's response for the benefit of any teacher who comes across this.

(Wally) "Teachers have just as many problems as anybody else. They have to go home at night and take care of their families, they have to pay the rent, the income tax, have to worry about their car breaking down." (Beaver) "No fooling?" (Wally) "Sure, and on top of that they have to come in in the morning and face 40 or 50 stupid looking kids. If you think that's hiding from the world, you are way off the beam." Thank you, Wally, and your writers; Dick Conway and Roland MacLane.

Another what might have been !
tweiss-673686 December 2021
The final shows with Wally, Eddie, and Lumpy just scream for a sequel. A new show with the three of them in college would have been a natural. The three trying to get along in their dorm room, taking classes, Lumpy struggling with his grades to stay on the football team, not to mention all of the adventures of meeting women and dating. And of course, Eddie's priceless cutting up. The producers and programmers really missed a great opportunity here.

Wally Confronts an Overprotective Father
holdingourown6 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Wally attends an upcoming all-night graduation party, and he wants to bring a relatively new girl in his class, Kathy Gregory. Mr. And Mrs. Cleaver had reservations about attending an all-night party, but it pales in comparison to Kathy's strict parents. Wally has to convince Kathy's father that he's an upstanding person, and after doing so, he must prove his reputation.

Despite Wally's best efforts, a mishap occurs, and Kathy's father blames Wally and grounds Kathy. Wally must once more confront him, and regain his trust. Would you have Wally's courage?

This episode realistically depicts situations that teenagers face, even today. This is an example of how the themes in the program are still relevant over half a century later. It also demonstrates how fresh the writing was, even into its final season.

Beav has it right
pmike-1131224 June 2021
At the very end, Beaver wonders if graduating is worth it: Wouldn't it be great to stay in school forever and hide from the real world like teachers? I've always thought the Beav's analysis was generally correct. (that's what many of them are trying to do, anyway).

A pretty good episode of the typical 50s-early 60s teenage lament: parents don't trust or understand us!

New student again arrive graduation week?
vitoscotti12 September 2021
Delightful overacting by Kathy. (Carole Wells) & her father (Herb Rudley). The drunk scene with 3 Stooges staple (Frank Sully) a highlight. Writers boldly plug in newly arrived students Melinda with Beaver now Cathy with Wally. Who transfers graduation week? Are the writers serious? The king of squares Wally this season is calling other students squares is a laugh.

Wally stumbles into the trick-bag!
ronnybee211213 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Things are moving along great for our man Wally. He is about to graduate high school, and he has asked a new-to-the-area girl, quite pretty,to the official graduation party. The party plans are still being debated, many of the young students are talking about having an all-nighter at the local country club, with an all-night selection of good food,an actual orchestra (no records!) to dance to,formal attire for all,etc...A real high-class shindig!

Of course the kids are all for an all-night party, but the adults are concerned about who is going to chaperone/watch all of these young graduates.

Before long,a group of 4 off-duty policemen are considered as a potential chaperone team for the big party. This convinces the parents to allow the party to proceed.

So far,so good.

The only problem is that the new girl's parents are reluctant to give permission for the daughter to go to an all-night party with Wally,a boy they've never met.

It's up to Wally to make a good impression on the girl's folks and get their permission to take their daughter to the all-night party.

Wally is naturally nervous and probably considers if this is really worth the trouble...but he bravely sees it through, and makes a great impression on the skeptical parents.

The party is a great success, everyone has a wonderful time with no problems at all. Then, just before Wally takes the young lady home in the early-morning, something completely unexpected happens. A drunk man manages to stumble into Wally's date and knocks her into a fountain! She is soaking-wet,and shocked. (Wally should have socked this drunk immediately,in real-life that is exactly what all but the weakest or sorriest of men would have done)!

Anyway,Wally takes his date home and as soon as her father sees her he has a fit and won't listen to a word from Wally or his daughter-then he orders Wally to leave!

Wally leaves but goes back the next day and tries to clear things up with the father. It is an uphill-battle,but eventually Wally and his date convince her father of what really happened. It is a rough ride for our man Wally but he sees it through to the end and convinces the girl's parents that he indeed is a good and decent young man. Good episode!

YES, WALLY IS A GENTLEMAN
tcchelsey10 November 2023
I agree, many thank you's to Dick Conway for writing one of the most popular later episodes, again not that far from the truth.

What is really surprising here, is that Wally and his date, Kathy (played by Carol Wells), are actually allowed to go to an all night party in the first place. This is one hilarious story, another page taken from Murphy's Law scrapbook. We all remember this one as kids.

The best part of the story, aside from all the goofy stuff, is that moment of truth. Wally gets to meet Kathy's stern father, Mr. Gregory (well played by Herb Rudley) and mom (Marjorie Reynolds). Marjorie was an obvious choice for the part, having played Mrs. Riley for years on the sitcom LIFE OF RILEY, and just as pleasant.

A drunk (played by funny Frank Sully) causes Kathy to get all wet at the party, ruining her dress, everything... and there's even more complications. In a way, it all plays out like a teen soap opera, albeit for 30 minutes.

But no matter what, Wally is the gentleman of the hour, and that's what its all about. Ward and June raised a good son.

Interestingly, shortly after this episode aired, Carol Wells married the great grandson of Los Angeles oil tycoon Edward Doheny. Super trivia question!

They had two children together, however, Carol continued to act for many years after, and today (in her 80s) is still available for roles. Good for her.

One of the best. FROM SEASON 6 remastered dvd box set. 2011 release. Thank you METV.

Was It Worth It?
StrictlyConfidential30 January 2021
(*Ward quote*) - "It's at times like this that the family comes first."

Wally and his fellow school-mates will be graduating soon and the Mayfield Country Club is holding an all-night party in honor of this.

Parent approval of this event is essential in order to keep the festivities going.

Wally would like to take Kathy Gregory to this party (which will be chaperoned) but it takes a lot of explaining to her parents to convince them to agree to allow their daughter to go.

Whatever happened to 1950s rock and roll
KeatsTV2 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In this story, Wally is about to become a high school graduate in a day or two and to celebrate the occasion, "the committee" has arranged for the graduating class to kick off their independence with an all night party at the local country club! Heck yeah!

Wally is uber excited about attending the event and at the dinner table he gives his understandably shocked family the event run down. The best part definitely sounds like the food that will be served. With such elaborate catering, formal wear and an orchestra, it's hard to believe that the country club didn't advertise and clear the party with the high school and local parents. However, some parents obviously knew enough about the party to be chaperones. Maybe Wally and Lumpy just didn't tell their parents so they could relax and have fun.

Wally ends up going with new girl (another one?) Kathy Gregory but only after he charms the girl's obnoxious father. After it's understood that there's to be no drinking or having 17 year old fun outside of waltzing to orchestra music (Elvis Presley, Fats Domino and Chuck Berry were chart toppers during this era), the party gets underway.

As the kids are leaving the party, a random drunk guy in a suit and tie stumbles by the country club fountain and accidentally knocks Kathy backwards into the fountain soaking her from head to toe. Mayfield comes off as a small town so it's odd that Kathy's hair is wreaked but dry when they arrive at her house. Due to possibly pacing all night, Kathy's dad refuses to listen to what happened during the incident and tosses good guy Wally out.

After hearing that Kathy got grounded by her dad, Wally heads over to her house to talk to her dad and predictably is able to get through Mr. Gregory's thick head. Lumpy and Eddie think Wally is both brave and stupid for this act. Solid episode!
