- Johnny gets a letter from the Territorial Governor giving him an appointment to West Point. Torn between his loyalty for Dan Troop and honored by the man who recommended him, he must decide how he wants to shape his future.
- After giving orders to complete the dishonorable discharge of Bern Lochard, Major Jason A. Leeds rides into Laramie to present Johnny with a letter from the Governor giving him an appointment to West Point. The Major pushed for the appointment and is pushing Johnny too hard to accept it in Troop's eyes. While Johnny ponders the decision, Lochard spots the Major and plots his revenge. He confronts the Major telling him he is going to kill him. The Major finds his hotel room trashed and Johnny's sword he brought broken. He returns to the Birdcage where Lochard confronts him and forces the Major into a duel. Johnny steps in and stops Lochard by wounding him. The incident allows the Major to better understand how Johnny can be useful where he is at leaving the decision to Johnny.—Anonymous
