- John Kemper is doing everything he can to drive off Laurie who killed his son but is now out on parole. Laurie decides to find a mail order husband to help fight John but gets more than she expected in him.
- John Kemper has not forgiven Laurie Kemper for killing his son when he attacked her even after Laurie on parole served three years in prison. Kemper runs off the men Troop sends to work Laurie's farm. Laurie tries a new tactic - a mail order husband, Bill Fells. He spent time in a Texas prison for his own crimes. Laurie makes it clear the marriage is to ensure a man to help her run the farm but there is to be no romantic interests. She expected Fells to be an older crusty type but he is a good looking man her age with a good temperament. Kemper and his men continue to bother them including beating Fells in Laramie. When Troop arrests Kemper's men for the beating, Kemper decides to burn their home but Johnny following Kemper witnesses his actions. The people of Laramie who were against the couple, change their minds based on the couple's actions versus Kemper's actions.—Anonymous
- Laurie Kemper is trying to make a go of her farm after getting out of prison for the manslaughter death of her husband, who was abusive. But her father-in-law is not satisfied, and uses his men to intimidate the workers on her farm to leave.
