- Pa Beason, dying, wants three things from Troop: his daughter has never worn a dress, he must make sure she has safe passage back East and his confession must help his sons have a better future. He has no objections but his sons might.
- Jed 'Pa' Beason, his two sons, and his daughter Iona burst into the Laramie Hotel. Jed is on a stretcher and he wants a room and the Marshal. The men are wanted for many raids. Jed is dying from "the fever", and he asks Troop for favors in return for his full confession. He wants to be buried in town, he wants Iona sent to live "back east", he wants to see her in women's clothes, and he wants his sons released. Troop refuses to let his sons go, but he will give them time to see to Jed as he dies. Lily dresses and styles Iona, who catches Johnny's eye. Iona returns to show her father, and Jed provides Troop with his written confession. Jed dies as he explains the arrangement to his sons. Jed is buried in town as he wished, but the boys try to escape the Marshal and Johnny. Iona tries to stop them, resulting in both being wounded. Iona heads east with Johnny's heart in tow.—Anonymous
