Charlie Harmon !!!!
mac-1106122 April 2017
How on earth is Charlie Harmon getting away with so many murders on so many different programmes. He is involved in a murder in this one , he was charged with murder and framing his wife in Criminal intent . he also killed a person in CSI NEW YORK. Surely by now he should have been locked up for life .

Homicide hits home
bkoganbing15 February 2015
The usually unflappable Carey Lowell gets hit hard in this one as the suspect turn out to be an ADA. A few episodes earlier David Marshall Grant was peripherally introduced in another case as a friend of Jamie Ross. Now he's the suspect in a case that also involves corruption in New York County DA's office itself.

This case hits home literally and figuratively. At the rear of the NY County DA's office in real life at 1 Hogan Plaza are some storefronts leading to Chinatown where criminal lawyers and bail bondsmen practice their trade. It is to one of these offices that Jerry Orbach and Benjamin Bratt respond to find the body of a bail bondsman.

The natural thing is to suspect one of his many clients and Orbach and Bratt settle on Jacinto Taras Riddick. But that doesn't pan out and it's Lowell herself who discovers that the ADA on Riddick's case who is Grant is the killer.

Flushing him out involves the office actually bringing a false prosecution and I do love the way Sam Waterston pitches the idea to Riddick. He makes one very attractive offer to a gang banger.

Lowell's rich background and rich ex-husband who gives considerable child support have come into play in other episodes. Grant who was struggling to make ends meet just succumbs. It probably isn't easy to be prosecuting drug dealers whose car might just cost more than your house or what you make in a year. No wonder so many prosecutors leave and become criminal defense attorneys as Grant probably would have done if this hadn't interfered.

This episode belongs to Carey Lowell.

In the dark shadow
TheLittleSongbird23 June 2021
Nearly all the previous Season 8 episodes of 'Law and Order' (my actual personal favourite of the 'Law and Order' franchise) are of a very high standard, with the only disappointment being "Blood" due to its improbable premise and every bit as hard to swallow execution and even that episode had a fair share of good things. With "Shadow", it was great to see more development to Jamie Ross, one of 'Law and Order's' better female prosecutors and one that should have lasted longer but sadly didn't.

"Shadow" is a very good and very well done episode in my view. Like other Season 8 episodes, it is a case of one half being better than the other but only really because the one half that is better is so good. It is not one of the best Season 8 episodes or a 'Law and Order' high point, but there is plenty in "Shadow" that represents what was so great about 'Law and Order' in its prime and more than enough to justify the show's appeal. Which was clearly big enough for it to last so long and still rerun regularly.

As said, "Shadow" is a case of one half being (a little) better than the other. Did feel that the policing was on the routine and formulaic side with not an awful lot to make it set it apart from other episodes.

It is a good thing though that the legal portion is a lot more interesting, which will be come onto a little later. The production values are solid and the intimacy of the photography doesn't get static or too filmed play-like. The music when used is not too over-emphatic and has a melancholic edge that is quite haunting. The direction is sympathetic enough without being leaden. The script is tight and thoughtful, raising some interesting points about the complications that come with prosecuting.

Did like the development for Ross a lot and it is always welcome when we learn more about her. Whenever that has been done, like it was in the Season 7 three parter it never got in the way of the cases and added some tension. Harmon is also an interesting character and provides the right amount of intrigue and tension later on, though do agree that the thought of us supposing to like him is a bit of a stretch.

The legal portion of "Shadow" is utterly riveting, has some nice clever turns and is never predictable. It is also taut and suspenseful enough. The acting is expectedly great, especially from Carey Lowell closely followed by David Marshall Grant.

Overall, very good. 8/10.

Who prosecutes the prosecutors?
knucklebreather13 November 2011
"Shadow" opens with the murder of a bail bondsman and the detectives quickly suspect one of his bail-jumpers, so they set a trap for him that's interesting enough. He's not the shooter but leads detectives and the DAs to realize that his defense attorney claims to be able to put in a "fix" and guarantee charges will be dismissed.

So this becomes one of a handful of L&Os to look at corruption within the DA's office, through the bizarre but apparently necessity of conducting a fake prosecution to see where the corruption is.

This episode wins with the legal half of the show. It's definitely not your normal episode and it's a bit of a stretch that we're asked to sort of like the D.A. in question since he's pals with Jamie, but it's still a good enough story.

Good story but usual McCoy

Warning: Spoilers
I don't like much season 8 as episodes except a few I didn't like much Ross getting to much self involved especially with Harmon and I didn't like much the false trial unethical probably Ben Stone would have left it to the attorney general convincing Adam that if it's involved in his office better ask for the attorney general to step,I felt sort in part for Harmon because he is struggling with morgage and deadts the other part he is completely crocked I liked junior soprano as a judge slamming McCoy with the false trial, like I said season 8 is not my favourite because Adam doesn't put a strain on McCoy.
