The cheating strategy described in this episode is based on a real-life scandal that was exposed in 1997. A California man, George Kobayashi, paid experts to take standardized tests in New York and telephone him with the correct answers. Kobayashi, based in Los Angeles, then inscribed the correct answers on pencils which were distributed to his students. Because the tests were administered at the same local time in each location, the three hour timezone difference between the coasts allowed the scheme to work.
In 1998, Kobayashi was sentenced to four years imprisonment after being convicted of organizing the scheme.
