Preparations for a surprise birthday party for Larry (Garry Shandling, sublimely neurotic) are undermined by writer Jerry (well played with seething rage by Jeremy Piven) getting fired due to his constant irresponsible behavior.
This episode really nails the hectic everyday chaos that's part and parcel to Larry's show: Besides Jerry being canned (Jerry's big kiss-off rant to Larry at the party is positively epic), everyone else has issues figuring out the right gifts to buy for Larry, with Arthur (a delightfully crusty Rip Torn) in particular experiencing problems with a delivery of booze for Larry. The catastrophic party itself proves to be a hilariously awkward marvel to behold. A total riot.
