Better Call Stevie Grant
vangamer30 April 2022
Yet another Larry Sanders episode of sterling quality, but what always stands out to me about this show was it was the first time I saw the amazing talent of Bob Odenkirk as smarmy, insincere and - naturally - super-successful agent Stevie Grant.

What became clear later was Odenkirk's gift for fast-paced patter would later be widely showcased in his role as Saul Goodman on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.

As Grant, Odenkirk nails the vicious dog-devour-dog nature of Hollywood in another memorable episode. His immortal non-committal line to an invitation from Hank - "Let's play it by ear, Honcho" was so perfect it has entered our family's lexicon.

Larry's new agent proves to be a weasel
Woodyanders9 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Larry (adroitly played to the angst-ridden hilt by Garry Shandling) decides to replace his nebbishy old agent Leo (an amusing turn by John Pleshette) with aggressive young hotshot Stevie Grant (a spot-on smarmy performance by Bob Odenkirk).

This episode not only astutely pegs the back-stabbing behind-the-scenes politics and machinations that are par for the course on Larry's show, but also points out how loyalty is a fickle thing in show business. Arthur (Rip Torn in fine crusty form) gets a few choice moments in which he takes issue with Grant's brusque manner. Moreover, it's a riot to see Hank (the always excellent Jeffrey Tambor) sing "Spinning Wheel" in a hilariously off-key voice. Barry Levinson also makes an uproarious impression as an extremely uncooperative guest on Larry's show. A total hoot.
