- Nikita digs into the past of her violent new recruit Karyn and uncovers shocking facts about the newest Operative.
- "It's not a pass/fail program that Section recruits face. It's do or die. Nikita fully empathizes with their plight. However, there's no room for compassion when she's asked to decide the fate of a new recruit."
This episode opens with Michael training a new recruit. Nikita, with Madeline and Operations, is looking on. Madeline tells Nikita she must choose whether the new recruit (Karyn) will join Section or be cancelled.
Nikita takes Karyn into a firing sim for training. Karyn gives up before the sim is done and Nikita shows her how it is done. She explains that the sim is not about shooting, but about getting shot. Inspired by Nikita, Karyn tries again and her performance improves.
Brian, Karen's former trainer, pulls Nikita aside and warns her that Karyn is sick and should not be allowed to join Section. Karyn comes on the next mission with Nikita. Karyn has trouble staying calm and must stop multiple times to get herself under control. When the shooting starts, Nikita looses track of Karyn and doesn't see her until they are exiting. Brian has been killed and Nikita sees Karyn running out the door.
While debriefing back at Section, Karyn says she never saw Brian, which Nikita knows to be a lie. Nikita confronts Karyn the next day while they're training and Karyn confesses to killing him. She tells Nikita that Brian raped her.
Nikita asks Birchoff to look into Karyn's psych file and he reports back to her just before they are to go on another mission. Karyn lied; she's been killing since she was seven. Brian was terrified of her and requested to be removed from her case.
On the final mission, Nikita runs out of bullets and is about to be shot, but Karyn saves her. She then goes another step further and shoots both bodies on the helipad multiple times while laughing. "What a rush!" she says.
Back at Section, Karyn confronts Nikita and reminds her that she saved her life. Nikita goes up to Operations's office and tells them to cancel her. Madeline informs Nikita that Karyn's already dead, that the decision was never truly hers to make. Nikita asks what would have happened if she'd wanted Karyn to join Section and is told, "...we would have had two problems."
