- Caine looks after a newly orphaned boy and a young, pretty rancher while a bounty hunter atop a nearby mountain silently observes his opportunity to pounce.
- Caine comes across the burned out building of a ranch, where a young boy is all that is left of family who lived there. After burying the child's father, Caine escorts him to a town where the boy believes he has relatives. Sadly, they are more interested in what they might take from the child. Caine reluctantly defends himself when the uncles, believing the "China Man" stole something from the ranch.
Caine finds work with a widowed ranch woman...and also finds he has romantic feelings for her. He and the boy move in and find a brief moment of harmony, as Caine shares with the child some of his Shaolin teaching. But the arrival of a bounty hunter and the likelihood that others will follow cast an ominous shadow on love. When the bounty hunter threatens to burn down the ranch, Caine must vanquish him, and leave.
