The Army stockade that Caine walks into in this program was obsolete by the post Civil War era. The Army quickly realized that its new 50-70, then 45-70 rifles were able to keep Indians far enough away that their weapons (bows, 44-40s) were well out of range. So, all the Army needed was a reasonably alert sentry and no post was ever under threat after Red Cloud's War (1866-68).
When Hontoon and Caine look down on the town, a car can be seen driving by in the background on the extreme left.
Caine tells Sgt. Bedford "They will have heard the shot", yet there was no shot, just breaking glass.
