King of the Hill

Edit

Summaries

  • Peggy convinces Principal Moss to hire her as the new full-time organic gardening teacher by promising the vegetables to the football team. However, organic gardening proves much harder than it sounds.

Synopsis

  • Tom Landry Middle School offers an Organic Gardening class, whose crops are used to feed to the schools football team. As this class is offered in place of gym class, Bobby is eager to sign up. Unfortunately he soon learns that the class is being canceled because the teacher who leads it is retiring, and no other teacher wants to teach it.

In order to help Bobby be able to take the gardening class, Peggy decides to try to talk Principal Moss into letting her take over the class. He agrees and so the organic garden is back up and running and Bobby is relieved that he does indeed get to take gardening instead of gym!

A few weeks go by and it is time to pick the first harvest to feed to the schools football team. The class walks out of the garden with a couple bushels of their crops, but all the fruits and vegetables are small and brown and half eaten by bugs. The football coach makes the team attempt to eat some of the food, and some of the players end up getting sick. After this disappointing harvest, Principal Moss tells Peggy that her teaching the gardening class doesnt seem to be working out, and he announces that he will have to shut it down once again. After pleading with him to let the garden continue and promising him they can do better, he decides to allow the class one more week to produce edible, organic food.

In order to figure out how to actually successfully grow organic produce, Peggy goes to see the previous teacher who taught the garden class to ask him how he did it. It is there where she learns that he cheated and used pesticides. He tells her it is not possible to grow good produce without the use of chemicals. Now Peggy knows what she has to do in order to keep the garden class going.

Peggy begins making secret late night visits to the garden to spray pesticides. Within a few days the garden spruces up and is looking great, and the class is ecstatic. After the week is up, and it is time to once again feed the produce to the football team, the class emerges from the garden with many bushels of fruits and veggies, all of which look delicious and perfect. The team and Principal Moss are pleased and the class is allowed to continue.

One night while Peggy is secretly spraying her pesticides in the garden, she accidentally inhales some of the chemicals and ends up falling asleep right on the ground. The next morning, Bobby, Hank, and the rest of the class enter the garden to find Peggy laying on the ground next to a large amount of pesticides, and she is found out.

The class, and especially Hank, is horrified by what they see, and Peggy tries to explain herself, stating that pesticides are necessary to grow good crops. Hank feels morally obligated to tell Principal Moss what has been going on, and when he does, Moss announces that the class is officially canceled.

Feeling ashamed of what she has done and causing the class to be canceled, Peggy talks Bobby into going against Principal Moss and secretly growing one last harvest, the proper way. Once Bobby is on board with the idea, he talks the rest of the class into giving it one more go, and they all team up and try to make the garden grow. Peggy is determined to make the garden work, and buys a bunch of organic gardening books. By following the tips from the books, she and the class are able to bring the garden to life without the use of any chemicals.

When it is time for the final harvest, they emerge once again from the garden with actual organic fruits and veggies for the football team. Principal Moss is so pleased with the determination of the class and the final product, that he agrees to let the class continue.
