Monk, thinking George can't afford to have his reputation sullied, decides to blackmail him. He knows that George did time in reform school when he was a teenager. George has never told his wife Louise, nor his son, Lionel, about this part of his life. Monk hints that he is going to continue to extract money out of him for the duration, George feels trapped.
George decides to come clean. He pulls aside his wife and son, and he explains that he had stolen a gift to give to his mother. Louise surprises him by telling him that his mother told her all about his reform school days years ago. Lionel tells his dad that he knew about it, too. It's no big deal to them; they understand that George made a mistake when he was young, and he learned from it.
George walks up to Monk and threatens to whip his behind. Monk threatens to tell George's "secret", but George announces that he's already let everybody know about it. Monk, angry because he's been outwitted, leaves after throwing some insults George's way.
