I Love 1989
Jason Donovan introduces the year where he was heading for a burnout and his romance with Kylie Minogue was about to hid the skids. Michael Hutchence was a bad boy that certain ladies could not resist.
Sorry Jason you could always pass the time on a Gameboy. Tetris is the game to play. Let Soul II Soul be the soundtrack of the summer, much better than the Stock Aitken & Waterman production line music.
It was also the year of alien invasions in the middle of the night. Those spaceships loved to draw patterns in the middle of corn fields. Very creative these little green men.
I was always under the impression at a certain time of the month, ladies became cranky and miserable. When adverts for tampons were allowed on television. All they wanted to do was dance on the beach, go skydiving, ride a beach buggy. Who knew?
Singer Stevie Lange certainly made an impression with her vocals for one of the products.
Thanks to television presenter and music entrepreneur Tony Wilson. It was the year of the hyped Madchester music scene. You have bizarre footage of Wilson interviewing the band Happy Wilson as they tried on some baggy jeans but he was also their manager!
My cousins took me around Manchester one night. There were people queuing round the block for the famous nightclub The Hacienda. They told me never stare at anyone in the queue for too long or they might just shoot you. Blimey, it was supposed to be the second summer of love!
There was no mention about the fall of the Berlin Wall or the Tiananmen Square protests.
