I Love 1981

Hey folks it is 1981, what shall we put on?

How about Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to Hollywood!

Forget that it came out in 1984 or The Young Ones was first broadcast in 1982. Worse the BBC film Threads was shown in 1984. This was badly researched drivel. If they wanted to discuss nuclear annihilation then wait until 1984.

If you want to discuss a disaster, there was the royal wedding between Charles and Diana. A not so fairy tale wedding.

Adam Ant presented a look back on what was supposed to be events of 1981. At least it was his year with the teeny boppers. Adam and the Ants got their 15 minutes of fame.

It was also the year of New Romantic bands like Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet. It was a shame Lufthansa Airport never made it big in the pop charts. For people who were missing Showaddywaddy, there was Shakin Stevens hiding behind the Green Door.

For teenage boys, there was Kim Wilde with Kids in America and Claire Grogan who was in in Gregory's Girl and also in the pop charts.

It was not a very interesting look at 1981. I could not get too enthusiastic about the darts segment.

It was also the year of the inner city riots in the summer of 1981 but the show decided to go all nuclear instead.

Awful Commentators
Johnny_West18 February 2020
The segment with Adam Ant was good, except for the bogus DJ who was probably about 5 years old in 1981 and yet she had a lot of nonsense remarks to make about Adam Ant's popularity, and they all sounded totally bogus.

Except for the actual artists who appear to provide commentary, the "social media" types that get most of the screen time are just obnoxious to listen to. The fact that most of them had nothing to do with 1981 or any of the artists is hard to ignore.

This series is pretty awful. It is like some kind of half-axed project that some intern put together, and by hitting up the old artists who are desperate for recognition and nostalgia, they put together a lot of snippets that do not mesh well because the people that produced this have no idea what 1981 or the 1980s were about.
