When Duncan first senses Richie, he reaches under the couch for his sword. As he pulls it out, the light clearly shines on the polished surface of the blade. In the very next angled shot, Duncan sits up and is holding the sword which is now still in its sheath.
Obvious sped up fighting during the duel in the loft.
