Pat Hingle was either channeling (or smoking) something funky when he played the role of Finley Carr, an embittered Confederate soldier, who survived the Civil War and is seeking revenge on Big John, with whom he had parleyed and been left with a hook for a hand (which he creepily uses to scratch itches on his face) as a result.
Hingle plays the role as flamboyantly as a repressed gay man could be played in those days. He travels with his brother (who harbors misgivings but is overruled) and a couple of younger men who follow him almost unquestioningly. Carr catches Big John by holding Victoria hostage, and exacts some pain on him, but ultimately, of course, falls short of getting the full revenge he seeks. Weird but interesting to watch.
