Meet the Nielsens

Hi Honey, I'm Home was a high concept sitcom idea from 1991. A black and white family in the colourful world of the 1990s.

Mike Duff loves old 1950s sitcoms and finds out that his new neighbours are the Nielsens. The sitcom characters he has just watched on television.

The reruns have been pulled. The family like other vintage tv characters have been relocated, until they are rediscovered by some new television executive. Only Mike knows their secret.

The homemaker is Honey who adheres to the three 'Cs' Cooking, cleaning and cids! Her husband Lloyd works in the office and expects dinner to be cooked by Honey as soon as he gets home. They have two kids and they represent the perfect 1950s nuclear family.

In contrast Mike's mom is a modern single mother. Elaine is an activist and appalled at Honey's subservience to her husband. Younger brother Skunk always gets into trouble as a delinquent.

The first episode sees Honey trying to get acquainted to the modern world. One with microwaves and homeless men living on the streets. Lloyd's boss is coming for dinner and they are hoping for a promotion.

However disaster strikes in the kitchen and Mike saves the day with fast food.

It is a strange first episode. It is meant to be both Honey and Elaine learning from each other. Unfortunately both are stereotypes. Also it is weird that Elaine does not recognise Honey as a tv character.

There was a clever touch with the boss being a famous actor from a 1950s sitcom. Subsequent episodes need to be an improvement.
