As was his common practice, Jackie Gleason didn't use a script for his cameo. His entire bit was ad-libbed as soon as the cameras started rolling. Lucy was very nervous as to what Gleason would do and say. Lucy was well known for insisting on thorough rehearsals which drove some of her costars crazy. A few years after this episode, Lucy and Gleason would appear together in a TV movie. Gleason when asked what is was like working with Lucy, he replied "she'd make a great drill sergeant".
The title refers to comedian Jack Benny who was successful in vaudeville, radio, movies and television who had one of the best sense of comic timing in show business. His comic persona included being very stingy, a poor violin player and never admitting to being over 39 years old.
In his diaries, Richard Burton claims that working with Lucille Ball on this episode proved to be very stressful for Jack Benny. Burton, who had detested appearing on the show in 1970, wrote, "Jack Benny, the most amiable man in the world and one of the truly great comedians of our time, says that in 4 days she reduced his life expectancy by 10 years."
