- A derelict sailboat is discovered just offshore of Oahu. McGarrett and a Coast Guard officer board the vessel and find the crew murdered as well as several rats, both dead and alive. However, McGarrett also notices the telltale signs of bubonic plague on several of the crew. McGarrett is put into isolation and asks Danno to find out who the passengers were. It is soon discovered that the boat was of Tahitian registry and the passengers were Tommy Brown, an accountant for the mob, as well as his wife Teresa and Teresa's father Leo Paoli, a mobster who was deported to France after being convicted of his mob activities. Now it is a race against time as Danno searches for the trio who are carrying plague spread it to the populace of the island and cause an epidemic.—Brian Washington <Sargebri@att.net>
- In the second series episode to deal with bubonic plague, the U.S. Coast Guard finds a schooner adrift off the coast of Oahu, and calls Five-O when it also finds three crew members murdered. McGarrett is called in, and finds the boat is rat-infested -- the crew members had all caught bubonic plague. McGarrett is also exposed to the disease and is taken to an isolation ward. Further investigation reveals that three people -- a Corsican gangster Leo Paoli, his daughter Teresa Brown, and Teresa's husband, Tommy Brown, a mob accountant -- had charted the schooner to take them across the Pacific from Asia, where Paoli had recently withdrawn $5 million in mob funds. The trio goes underground in Honolulu's seedy netherworld and can't be located, so the Governor declares the whole island in a state of quarantine -- no flights can depart Honolulu International Airport and no boats can leave without all passengers being checked out. As Teresa goes downhill steadily, Brown gets a shot of a plague vaccine (Danno, to a mobster who met Brown: "Tetracycline isn't worth a damn for someone who already has the plague ... by the way, have you had your shot?") and searches for a clandestine way to get off the island. Teresa dies and Brown shoots his father-in-law (Paoli), wounding the older man who goes down spewing curses at him. Brown manages to get a helicopter to come from Hilo to an isolated part of Oahu, where he can fly to the Big Island and get to the mainland via the Hilo airport. After Danno interrogates Paoli, still spewing venom about Brown ("That lying son of a ...!"), and gets directions to the takeoff point, it becomes a race against time.—Peter Harris
