- McGarrett survives a bombing of his car but is blinded. His sight may or may not return. He begins rehabilitation under the no-nonsense supervision of Nurse Lavallo. Five-O's investigation fails to turn up a suspect among known criminals. Meanwhile, McGarrett's attacker is determined the kill the lawman in the hospital where he is undergoing rehabilitation.—Bill Koenig
- Roger's father felt that his should've been arrested for assault and battery that send a tourist to the hospital in a coma, he blamed McGarrett for his action, and bombed his 1968 Park Lane, and blinded him temporarily, McGarrett to Masterson: your son committed a vicious crime
- It`s McGarrett`s birthday and he arrives at Five-O HQ. Poto, a local boy, offers to clean McGarrett`s windshield for a quarter which he agrees to. Inside the outer office is empty, and in his office is a surprise party with the governor and the Five-O staff. After getting his gifts (which he curiously does NOT open) and his cake the party ends. Outside, a man Masterson walks over to McGarrett`s car and opens the hood. Poto witnesses this but Masterson says he is fixing the car.
McGarrett leaves the office outside with Danny and they part, though McGarrett drops a wrapped gift walking to his car. As Danny gets to his car he sees the gift and tells McGarrett who had just put the gifts in his car. He slams the door to get the stray gift as Masterson watches, and McGarrett`s car explodes causing Steve to get a severe head trauma and lose his eyesight.
At the hospital he is diagnosed with the a concussion and the doctors tell him they cannot give him an idea of when and if his eyesight will return (the blind part of the episode`s title, Steve being the tiger). A speciality nurse Lavallo (Marion Ross before her character Mrs. C stint on Happy Days), is assigned to train McGarrett to use his other senses to compensate. They develope a bond while the rest of Five-O investigate the bombing.
Che Fong (lab) figures out the trigger was a spring loaded into a tube that when the door was closed, fired off the dynamite. The tube is from a special type of automobile suspension. As Five-O digs into the case they uncover many island thugs with motives, but all the alibies check out, including a teenager that McGarrett busted for nearly beating a citizen to death.
As the investigation continues, McGarrett is learning from nurse Lavallo about smell and hearing and feeling (breezes, sunlight and shade on his skin, etc). He gets an investigation update and realizes that he forgot about Poto, and Five-O round the boy up to look at mugshots. He cannot identify anyone so they take him with to the auto dealership to talk to the service manager about the suspension parts. Poto sees Masterson`s photo on a bulliten board, and Danny makes the connection to the teenager beating suspect (Masterson`s son). They break open Masterson`s locker and see more of the tubes, dynamite, and a newpaper clipping of McGarrett on the inside door.
Meanwhile Masterson is at the hospital and rigs a distraction explosion to get the HPD guards and hospital staff away from McGarrett in physical therapy. Masterson confronts McGarrett and Lavallo in the PT room where Lavallo turns off the lights so Masterson is technically blind as well. McGarrett uses his newly heightened senses to track Masterson around the room and overpower him as the rest of Five-O arrive for the arrest.
Time passes and McGarretts sight is returning, his vision clears in his hospital room and he see a lovely young nurse mistaking her for Lavallo. She apologizes and states she is nurse Feinberg, and she is his new nurse. He is told to put on his slippers by Feinberg as she leaves the room. He gets a call, its Lavallo but she tells him she is assigned for a long rotation in surgery and cannot visit with him. He asks for her first name and she replies "Its Edith." and hangs up. Steve takes a walk out of his room past a nurse`s station and says hello, from behind we see a nurse say hello back and as Steve walks away, she turns with a slight sadness in her eye, it is Edith Lavallo and she knows she cannot reveal herself to McGarrett.
