Paladin looks at the base of the bullet and rejects it because it does not have a Berdan primer. It is impossible to tell whether it has a Berdan or Boxer primer unless looking down the empty cartridge or into an empty primer pocket.
Berdan primed ammunition was used primarily in Europe. A berdan primed case has the anvil in the case head and has 2 primer holes to ignite the powder charge in the case. America uses boxer primed cases with only one flash hole to ignite the powder charge in the case. Some surplus ammo has entered the U.S. which is berdan primed however the majority are boxer primed cases. Berdan primed cases require a special reloading die to resize & deprime Berdan primed cases.
Paladin incorrectly quotes Cervantes when he says "a jest that gives no pain is no jest." The correct quote is "a jest that gives pain is no jest."
Paladin pronounces the Berdan primer as one would pronounce "Burden." The correct pronunciation is ber-DAN.
