This episode has no closure.
kfo94942 September 2013
Here is another episode that has a strange ending that really does not match the story. When the credit begin to roll the viewer almost feels taken by the writer as the show really did not have an opening and absolutely no closure.

The story centers around Vince Walsh who had his brother arrested by Marshal Dillon and then found guilty and was hanged in Hay City. Vince is now set on killing Marshal Dillon. But here is the odd part, he is going to make Matt draw on him by doing unwanted deputy work around Dodge (not the most interesting challenge).

Anyway the story continues as Vince is making a form of a 'citizen's arrest' on people until the town believes Vince would be a great value as a paid regular deputy working beside Matt. Matt is not buying it and thinks Vince is up to some shenanigans.

I never knew where this story was going. If he really wanted the Marshal dead it may have been better to hide in an alley or by a tree outside of town instead of being a regular site at the Long Branch. The episode ends in just a strange way as it began with nothing being accomplished. Not the best show in the box.

Head scratcher and not from lice.

Warning: Spoilers
I have to agree with other reviewers that this was one of the weaker episodes of Gunsmoke. And another head scratching scene when Matt tells the man wanting him to draw first to get out of town when he should have arrested him for clubbing Chester. My head is sore from all the head scratching while watching this below par episode of the usual great series.

Sloppy Script
dougdoepke16 July 2012
Following a killing provoked by a bullying cowboy, Matt turns the culprit over to the law after which he's hanged. Now the bully's brother (Aidman) plots revenge on Matt by forcing him to draw first. But how will he do that.

Not very convincing episode. Just how Vince thinks acting as Matt's unwanted deputy will force Matt into drawing first is not made clear. This is also one of the few entries that crosses the humor line with Chester's slow wits. At the same time, I'm not sure what to make of the ending. It almost seems as if the script was hurried into premature production. All in all, it's an entry that falls short of the series standard.

Marshal Dillon Does Not Need A Deputy Like Vince
StrictlyConfidential1 December 2020
(*Dave Walsh quote*) - "None of you saw anything."

Vince Wylie (aka. Vince Walsh) has come to Dodge to seek vengeance for his brother, Dave who was hung for shooting down another man.

Wylie (who's an ace gunman) targets Marshal Dillon and tries to get him to draw on him first.

Marshal Dillon becomes suspicious of Wylie's actions and tells him to clear out of Dodge.

Disappointing episode

Warning: Spoilers
Bet you're a big fan of Gunsmoke like i am? Sure y'all are or y'all wouldn't even be here! So when i read the prior reviews i wanted to be mad! And argue! But i can't, so i won't. Really was ok with the end, always fun to see the bad guy be slapped around and humiliated. Oops guess the was a "spoiler" sorry. Sadly just the premise then the whole story made no sense. tsk tsk. "Unwanted Deputy". Well they can't ALL be winners.
